Back to the Future question???

Basically when in #2 the doc and Fox go into the future, how if Fox able to see his future self??? I mean didnt he leave the present and go into the future meaning he should not exist in the future since he used to the delorian to travel to the future. Anyone know what i mean?????????????
Its confusing but think about it.

He travelled into the future, and then back to the present time, meaning he continued his existence from the point where he left.

he can come back to the present and then continue his life and the future self could just be the continuation of that.

EDIT: i was too slow.

but think about it.
1. He leave the present with doc (we all agree)
2. Since he left the present to go to the future, his life stops in the present and he doesnt exsist till he lands in the future.
3 Now when he's in the future he is old and see's himself. That cant be since his life stopped in the present and started again in the future.
4 He shouldnt exist from lets say ex 1985-2005. (Left in 85 and showed back up in 2005)

Now if what you guys are saying is true, when he goes to the past or future he must travel back to the present time down to the millioth of a nanosecond in order for there not to be two of him

His leaving in 1985 in the DeLorean to go to the future created a DIVERGENT timeline at that point. However, when he traveled into the future, he continued along his original timeline to his alternate future. This can be se<beep> <beep> <beep>WARNING.. He didn't show back up in 2005, he showed back up in 1985. Basically, to the outside world, it appears that he was gone for very little time, say an hour, or a day, but he was in alternate times for longer, say maybe a week.

What will really screw with your mind is at the end of BTTF3 when Doc says that the future is unwritten. BTTF2 shouldnt have happened then... 😀

This is the reason when professors in Science Fiction classes ask you to write a paper of time-travel, they prohibit references to Back to the Future...

yea its really crazy and i never really thought about it until now.
like here is a time line for #2
+ = existance
- = non exsistant

+++++++++++('85)---------------('90)------------------(05)+++++++++++++

see he shouldnt have existed in that period 85-05 therefore he should have never saw himself in the future

Hmmm...Me thinks you need to get out more often and worry not so much about something that is not real.........

I don't understand why you are saying he doesn't exist from 1985-2005. In BTTF:3, he returns to 1985 and continues his life.

we're just speculating for fun. relax.

i get what he's trying to say.

FFactory0x is saying that the moment Marty (michael j. fox) left his present world and went to the future, he should not be able to see himself in the future because he "ceased to exist" when he left his present world.

How can Marty have a future if he ceased to exist in the world? It's like he's alive he's alive he's alive, then BOOM, he left this world for good....no more marty mcfly, thus no future.

But I also know the reason for why he sees his future is what someone already said, there was a divergent timeline so he was seeing another dimension of himself or something like that.

BUT AGAIN, ITS JUST A MOVIE, TIME TRAVEL IS UNPOSSIBLE! It will embiggen all of us in a perfectly cromulent way.

After a bit of quick thinking, it seems to all work out ok. As long as you assume that nothing in time can be ever changed, aka it was all destined to happen.

Because, if I remember BttF3 correctly, Fox would've never existed unless he had gone back in time and saved his grandfather. Which couldn't have happened unless time travel was inevitable. I could be remembering the movie wrong, it's been a long time.

Then this also means that the change in Fox's family in BttF2, when Biffs becomes their lackey, is a destined discontinuity in Fox's timeline. Weird.

Doc must've been lying, or simply wrong, about the future being unwritten. Otherwise anytime you traveled in time, that timeline moves forward without you in it, and thus you would never see your own future. And thus the movie wouldn't work. We can't have that now, can we?

FFactory0x I love the trilogy so you bring up an interesting point. Of course we all know it's hypothetical ramblings but it's an intriguing concept regardless. The movies are fun to watch so why not do a little speculating on the finer details of time travel real or not.

Which is why i said BTTF2 wouldnt happen. Because in BTTF3 the "You're Fired!" erased after Marty decided not to race Flea from the chili peppers, err Needles 😛 and when jennifer asked why this happened doc said because "your future is what you make of it" meaning its unwritten. Man what a mindfvck! 😀

No, IMHO it has nothing to do with divergent timelines. Just like in BTTF where Doc sent Einstein into the future, Doc and Marty both experienced an extra minute while Einstein went into the future, that Einstein did not. Put it this way: If I go into the future a year, and return to the exact moment in time where I left, everything will continue as normal, because to the rest of the world, I never went anywhere.
