There are two Delorean's in 1885.

The one that the Doc arrived in.

The one Marty took back to 1885 after the electronics were fixed by the Doc in 1955.

Why not siphon the gas from the one Doc took back with him and put it in the one Marty arrived in?

My guess is Doc took the gas and used it for something else.
 
What I want to know is what happen to that train he built that was flying around time?

It does, but that isn't really the worst plot hole in those movies. 😛 Its hard to take them that seriously. Remember when he used a banana peel and an old beer can to create a nuclear reaction?

My explanation (that might be better): When Doc was struck by lightning he went back farther than Marty did when he went to rescue him. This is evidenced by the fact that Doc was a well-established blacksmith and inventor by the time Marty arrived. It's certainly plausible that Doc's version of the Delorean had fuel in it but that the fuel had been sitting in a gas tank for a not insignificant amount of time and had become unusable.
 
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big bowl of wibbly wobbly timey wimey... stuff
 
Also - at that point when the deLorean was hit by lightning - It was flying was it not? I'm assuming the entire car had been converted to run off the mr. Fusion. Where else but the engine bay would you put the hover mechanism? So no gas anymore. And the mr. Fusion unit was damaged by the lightning.
 
Why didn't they pull a Bill and Ted and make a mental note that they'd come back in time and leave a filled gas canister at an innocuous spot before they arrived in the past(as to not run into themselves). Then walk over to the innocuous spot and tada... gas!

Nah, at the beginning of 2 Marty asked the Doc if the Delorean "ran off of garbage" and Doc told him that Mr. Fusion had replaced the need for the plutonium but the car itself was still powerd by an IC engine that needed traditional fuel.

Why didn't he just go back to 1884 and leave some gas cans lying around for him to use? At some point he has the time machine train that can go anywhere.

IIRC they only had like 2 weeks until Tannon was suppose to shoot Doc in the back or whatever. Cutting it pretty close for no good reason but I think it was just to add a sense of urgency to the film as the prior two had. Its pretty hilarious that they're always in such a rush when they have a time machine. Honestly, Marty probably should have at least put an extra gas can, tires and some oil and probably a bunch of spare parts in the car but you know.

The stupidest part of the movie to me was when they tied the delorean to a bunch of horses. Then after that failed Doc exclaims "Its not use! The fastest race horse in the world can't get anywhere near 88mph!" No shit, why did they bother trying that? I don't know anything about horses and I knew that wouldn't work.

Refining gas probably would have been a waste of time when really all they needed to do was find a big hill with a pretty straight road on it. I guess maybe those are a little hard to find back then though.

Didn't have roads anywhere in the world in 1885. Just dirt trails and cobblestone or brick streets in the cities for pedestrians. Also in southern california - thats canyon country. Probably would have taken a big effort to move the delorean somewhere there existed giant smooth hills with nothing on them.

Were there any steep rail climbs?

Not that big of effort. It was the 80s. Most cars weighed between 300-500 pounds back then. 😀
