If Old Biff went back in time and gave himself the almanac then when he went back forward in time to put the time machine back wouldn't he go forward to the altered future and so the time machine never would have been put back?

not if he used a time stabalizer, to block out the quantum flux of chronoton particles during the time dilation periods.

I remember wondering that same thing when I was watching it once. I guess the writers figured no one would catch it.

No. Listen to what the doc says about the multiple time lines.

He says that they can't fix the problem in the future because they'd go forward in the altered future. As soon as Biff gave the almanac to himself he'd be going into the altered future if he chose to go forward in time again...

Technically no.

The timeline doesn't become divergent until BIFF2 begins to bet on sport games.... at that time, the timelines become divergent, so technically, BIFF1 *can* go back to the future, because the timeline hasn't diverged yet.

example:

...............................V BIFF 2 arrives here
------------------------------------------------------------------ <-- normal timeline

------------------------------\ <-- point of divergence
.......................................\
.........................................\_________________________ <-- new timeline

Here's another Back to the Future goof.

When Marty goes back to the 1885 in BTTF3 his fuel line is punctured by an arrow. That leads to the big train scene where they try to get the Delorian up to 88 MPH. Why didn't they siphon the gas out of the Delorian that Doc Brown hid in the mine shaft? There were 2 Delorians in 1885

I watched them all, 1&2 in a row then 3 on the third day, in my opinion, BTTF 3 was a fine movie and really well made, until you get to that stupid steam time machine at the end. I mean COME ON! If they had omitted that scene or just had the Doc 'Borrow' the delorian that was still sitting IN A MINE in 1885, the movie would have stood up to the first two. One stupid scene ruined the movie for everyone, and it had to be the last one. Had they just ended it with the delorian being destroyed (and Marty escpaing the accident) it would've been fine. Maybe the end they should've looked down the tracks or something.

We know it's possible because it is on TV. We just haven't figured out how it's done yet.
