sweet deal...i had to jump on board this one. < $30/shipped with a fan grille works for me.

quick question, while on the topic of fans...can anyone recommend a good fan controller that can handle a vantec tornado fan, preferably a 3.5" bay model?

Not sure you will find a good 3.5" one that will work with a Tornado. I have a Sunbeam Rheobus and it will handle 20W/ channel which is more than a Tornado.

Does this HS cool any better than the Alpha 8045 with a 80 mm fan on it? This is what I'd be replacing, but I'm not sure that I'm improving anything here. The 92 mm fan that I have is rated at the same cfm and noise as my 80 mm fan on the Alpha, so I don't think the fan will do any better. How do the heatsinks compare on their own?

The 900 might be slightly better, but honestly I don't think it is worth the upgrade

Kinda off topic question but what is the db level of a stock fan? I consider my stock CPU fan (on top of an 1800+ Athlon XP in an ASUS A7V333 mobo) to be loud but maybe its just me. I read here that 20 db is considered very quiet so what is the level of a regular stock cpu fan?

Thanks in advance.

well that is most likely a 60 mm fan so while I dont know the DB, I can tell you it is quite a bit higher than 20

Thanks for the post BG4533.

Grrr... That is what I also ordered, but what I got was a 80mm Panaflo. I also got a 92mm grill, you would think they would notice their error.

Now I have to wait and see what they will do to fix the problem. :(

P.S , this is the first fan I got that has no connector on it, WTF is up with that? Just 3 leads... hope the 92mm one has a connector!?

Panaflo's have interchangeable lead wiring. I've bought two Panaflo's from SVC in the past and they both included a 3-pin lead in addition to whatever happend to already be attached to the fan.

Panaflos usually do NOT include any kind of connector. You have to either purchase a tail with a 3 pin connector, a 4 pin connector or solder on your own connector.

Sorry to here about your problem Elixer. SVC hasn't really given me any problems in the past and the one time I ordered something that ended up being OOS they notified me within an hour and gave me options. Goodluck.

Yeah, SVC is USSUALLY great, however I have heard that when the DO screw up, they are real jerks abotu making it right. If they pull that kind of crap on me though, ill dispute with my credit card and they can suck it down.

I have not had problems with SVC in the past but if they do screw up, be nice about it. Email them and go ahead and add a resellerrating which reflects their screw up and keep the resellerrating updated. Once they fix your problem, let people on resellerrating know by updating your review. This should get their attention in fixing the problem. I had a problem like this with case-mod and I was nice about it and they were nice in return.

What are you basing your answer on?

I got an email from SVC saying my order is on hold because the Panaflo 12M 92mm is out of stock (dam* you AT'rs), and I could remove it from the order or replace with a different fan to continue the order. I assume I can just wait until they get it back in stock (anyone know?). I'm in no hurry. Pretty cool of them to let me know and give these options.

It seems the Panaflo 92mm has an RPM lead, correct? The 80mm 1LA does not.
If it does, then if the Panaflo doesn't come with a connector, you should be able to splice in a connector with this to power by 4 pin and still have RPM - http://svc.com/3pinto4pinad1.html

Not on any reviews, just on the fact that I know the pla8045 is a good cooler, and I doubt you would get alot more out of the 900a. Call it a 'hunch' however if you really want to try a 900a go for it, I think its a gerat deal and if youve got an extra 20$ dont sweat it. Plus it looks cooler than the 8045 and can handle larger quieter fans which is a plus

I ask the same question: Is this correct?

This is from the description on the SVC page:

"optional third lead wire signal (Locked rotor alarm sensor, 2PPR)"

I'm confused by the word "optional" and the abbreviation "2PPR." Can someone clarify this for me (us)? Does this fan have a three wire connector that will send a RPM signal to the system, or not?

No, rotor lock is not RPM sensing. I think by optional they simply mean that the rotor lock can be used, but is not required. Most Panaflos do NOT have RPM sensing ability. Not sure what 2PPR means.

-edit-
2PPR refers to 2 Pulses Per Revolution. I guess it is how the rotor lock functions.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose that this means that any hardware monitoring program (or motherboard) that monitors fan speeds would not be able to detect the speed of this fan.

That's not to good if you are using this for a CPU fan, IMO. Some mobo's look at cpu fan RPMs as a "permissive" for starting. These boards may not allow a boot if they don't see a cpu fan turning (and in some cases not just turning but, rather, turning at a speed over some minimum threshold value).

I have not come across a single mobo that does not allow you to turn off the don't boot without a fan thing. While RPM sensing is nice, it is far from required. What do you really need it for? If you are worried about it failing set up your BIOS or a program to turn off the computer when the CPU/ case reaches a certain temperature.

I e-mailed them yesterday, but still no reply as of 5:54PM ...Now the waiting game begins.

Btw, about the RPM monitoring mentioned above, some mobos do allow you to turn it off, BUT some also have the check on by default, and if you have to reset your CMOS, I hope you have another fan handy, since you won't be able to power up for more than 2 secs!

There should be a way to bypass the check. I had a Soyo board like you described, but the check could be skipped by holding the insert ket (i think) while booting.

I'm assuming the coupon is still applied though towards the end of my order, after entering "thermalright," I got the message that "The Coupon Code you entered has expired"

IMO, it is pretty lame for a company NOT to answer a e-mail in 1 day. I guess they get lots of mail @ rma@svc.com. :|

Looking at the web site, the 92mm fan I was supposed to get is out of stock now.
