Sorry fellows, really stupid question, but what is a super-7 motherboard? My dad has a Pentium Classic 133 computer with Intels 430TX Motherboard I believe. Now tell me guys if I can plug the 450 in somehow(it was my understanding that the board supported up to 233MHZ cpu. Do you think it will work and if not whats the max CPU I can Aim for(maybe K6-2 300 or something)

Um, I would post this question in the CPU or motherboards forums, you will get an amazing amount of info over there,

But socket7 and Super Socket7 are not the same, although I think Super Socket 7 is backwards compatible...I could be wrong...

macsuck, try the link at the top of the page on the original post... 🙂

vladgur:
SS7 is 100Mhz FSB/PC100 and has AGP, although the CPU sockets are the same. I had a standard K6-III and K6-II in a TX socket 7, but not the K6-3+. I now have 2 3+ @2.1v and an old 2.4v K6-III in my linux server-all 3 SS7. ..and 2 retired K6-III 350s@400.

Make sure your TX has 2-2.2v max for a k6-3+ and 2x multiplier = 6x, which isn't bad at 75, or 83Mhz bus speed. It also has to be MMX capable. The main problem is that the BIOS probably wont handle the 3+, as older SS7 can't. It's actually a notebook CPU, but smokes in a compatable desktop. I have them in 2 Soyo 5EMA+ v1.0 ATX boards, 5/00 BIOS.

I bought 4 of these chips from the original PCLiquidators sale. They are all running at higher than 450 and on different SS7 mobos. These are sweet chips and very stable..just remember to be very careful about your voltage settings as these chips will fry very easily. You guys should all be thanking Trifecta for showing a great deal on nice affordable chip. For those of you who are thinking about buying this chip for your old mobo, remember one thing...your mobo must be able to support at least 2.1 volts...just a word of warning thats all..
and thats my .02 worth..

Perfect timing - the k6-III 400 in my server just met it's maker, thanks to a fan failure (time to set up ShutdownNOW!). I know some boards that took the k6-III can't handle the III+. Anyone tried a III+ in a Supermicro P5MMS98 or Epox EP-MVP3G-M (rev 0.2 - the 1MB BIOS version)?

I have A CTX portable, the Mobo is TX mobile (name unknown).

Currently works with AMD K6-266 mobile, (4x66) has only 66MHz fsb.

If I get this K3-450 would it work 6x66=400MHz (using the x2=x6 setting).

i'd check the voltagese on the CTX chip, some CTX notebooks used desktop chips, if you can manipulate the jumpers which is very possible on a clone laptop like that, you may be able to use it.

I just got a K6-3+ 450 from Tigerdirect. Had no problem with them at all. Its going in an ancient old Asus P/I-P55T2P4 HX chipeset mobo. This mobo has voltage adj down to 2.0V!! Gotta love ASUS! It has 75 and 83 bus speeds also. If you set the multiplier to 2x, the K6 will run @ 6x. I'll be running it at 6 x 75 = 450. I'm not a big fan of the 83 MHz bus speed. This is going into the kids PC. It already has 128 meg of SIMM EDO ram. Nice upgrade for $50. Did you know these chips have 256k of onboard cache and are .18u? Not bad! Here is some info from Toms. Here is another article using my exact mobo.

Thanks hans007.

I found the CTX manual, has switch setting for CPU core voltage from 1.8V to 2.8V.

So I will give it a try.

oldfart,

glad to see that I am not the only one who has gotten good customer service (or at least, no problems) with tigerdirect...

Those K63+ with the 256 on-die cache really are excellent chips...

I almost exclusively use this machine...It seems to be really snappy, web pages seem to load faster, and office products just fly right along...

here is some good news for you: I am seeing some real performance increases with this chip when using Windows Whistler! I used to have win2k sp1 and now I am beta testing Whistler. All of my benchmarks have gone up, even 3d performance, and thats using the crummy stock video drivers!!

anyways, enjoy that chip!

stricly OEM's get this bad boy...

Dont bother though, the 500's wont go any higher than the 450's when overclocking. And you wont see much performance difference on a 450 vs 500 when not overclocking....

my 2cents

Trifecta and olfart,
i just made an online purchase for that k63+450 and they added a $5 fan (shown on my reciept) i don't need or want, did you get this done to you too?
Also i am now noticing that the ad (from the first link) says k6-3plus450 but the image is of a k6-3 450. There discription doesn't seem to indicate that it is a k6-3+ chip either. Did you recieve a k63+450? maybe this ambiguity is the cause of tigers consumer affairs problems... I am certainly less happy now then immediatley after i made my purchase.

thanks

This is what I got, and yes, it is a K6-3+ 450. There was no fan included. This is from the conf email:

1 CP2-K63-450P C AMD K63 Plus 450Mhz CPU (L2-256k Cache .18 Micron) 49.99

Ive called them on the phone several times, and they have been able to answer my questions every time. I would suggest giving them a call.

I got a K63+

I dont even know if they made a non + k63....

anyone else know?

Yes, I have a K6-III .25 micron 400@450 2.4v and retired 2 350@400 2.4v, for the .18 III+. The old K6-III were discontinued last Dec. and had yield problems.

thanks for your replies Trifecta and oldfart, i can't really call them bacause i have someone in the the usa buying it for me (i am from canada, eh!) oh, that and i don't have a phone. :Q
I'm also getting that niffty gainward dual head geforce mx card $138, from
http://216.46.244.63/merchant/e-imixhome.htm
item code is BV-CT32MXTV
review here
i found it in GetInMyFatBelly's post
here
btw: thanks goes out to GetInMyFatBelly.

I don't know why they added a fan to my purchase, but maybe i can use it on my new vid card.
I will let you know what happens when i get the items!
thanks again guys!

I just checked Tigers website and they have the item listed as a K63+ .18micron L2 256K cache Chip....

That would suggest that you ordered the right item. I would suspect that if you purchased it from their site, you would recieve the same item that I did...

ONCE AGAIN>>

Please people, be careful and check your voltage on your MOTHERBOARD before booting up this chip...

as many people have already ranted:

This is a mobile chip that people are supping up their desktop S7 motherboards !
