Back from giving blood

That's gotta be the lowest form of rejection. Apparently, you can't donate if you've been to Europe sine 1980, which I have. They're afraid of mad cow desease. Oh well 🙁

Yes, pretty much. What's funny, they were less concerned about my visit to Africa (lived there between ages of 3 and 5) than Europe.

It's not just that you've been to Europe, you have to have spent a certain amount of time there. (1 month? 3 months?) I was in Germany and Austria for about 10 days in September 2001 and I still give blood regularly.

Guess that gives me reason for not attending the blood drive at work since I went to Germany back in 98.

Yes, but I've been there for way over that period. It's not just the longest visit but all the time you spent in europe between 1980 and now.

Yep, accumulated time.

If you've had a blood transfusion in a hospital (say back in '98), does that mean you aren't allowed (or have an excuse not to) to give blood ?

If you go into an area known for Malaria, you can't give blood for XXX years...

I havn't given blood since High School... back when it got me out of a class or 2, and they fed me cookies and orange juice. Good Deal.

Me: "I feel light headed still.." Nurse: "You better lay here and have another cookie.." Me: "Yeah, thats a good idea." {repeat as needed}

Around here they appeal for blood all the time, only they never seem to actually want anyone's blood!

I can only imagine them turning away like half of all potential blood donors.

im in the same boat. lived in Germany from 1989-1993. my wife and I are banned for life to give blood.

Are people who actually live in Germany (or wherever) able to donate blood over there? Or do they have to import "good" blood from other countries?

well, it's all about potential risk. even after they take your blood they still screen it for so many diseases you might not even know about, and could still reject it.

i was only turned away one time, for taking medication for a cold too close to the donation date. i just came back a week later.

We have 2 blood centers operating in South Bay Area: Red Cross and Stanfrod Blood Center. Red Cross is _extremely_ selective about whose blood they accept: I have a skin graft (my own skin graft) and have been to Europe frequently, but my accumulated time is quite low. Yet, Red Cross won't take my blood. However, Stanford Blood Center's requirements are much more relaxed: not only they take my blood, but they call me whenever they have a shortage (I have O+ which is quite common). I guess, it's the difference between public vs private blood bank.
