Solomons was beyond all explanation of awesome :)

Stayed at Uepi Island Resort in Marovo Lagoon, one of the largest if not the largest lagoon in the world:

http://www.uepi.com/

Water was 29’C and I did 13 magnificent beyond words dives in my boardies and a t-shirt, without getting cold!

First dive we rolled off the boat into 40-50m vis, massive coral walls dropping into the abyss, and the best hard coral and fish life conceivable! That first dive we saw a big leopard shark, three pygmy devil/manta rays cruised past in perfect formation and sync, a turtle paid us a visit, some white-tip and black-tip reef sharks and graceful whalers dropped in, lots of nudibranchs...i could go on and on...

Vis was superb throughout, did some magnificent swim-throughs, saw loads and loads of sharks, turtles, mantas, spotted eagle rays, big black-barred and yellow tail barracudas, mantis shrimp, sea snakes, octopi/octopuses, dived a P-38 which was in amazing condition (still had the .50 cal ammo in the belts up the front, flaps still set), did a neat sinkhole dive, dived a tuna boat that was sitting on its stern leaning parallel to a coral wall, bow in 2m, stern in 40m and you could just hang back and see the whole thing like it was in glass in front of you, coral and reef-fish was astounding...

They have some neat videos and pics on their facebook page too, the turtle-feeding one was taken while we were there :)

Seriously, diving of a lifetime!

Accommodation was very pleasant indeed (we had a very well thought out beachside bungalow), local divemasters were very good and incredible at spotting things (and stealing massive trigger fish eggs to feed other fish, and blowing perfect bubble rings, like a smoke ring but with air, would stay unbroken getting absolutely huge), food was beyond top notch, solbrew beer was very good, and starting the evening off with gin & tonics never felt more right.

I am mildly ashamed to say that the place had a very farcry-like feel to it, right down to the jetties, fuel storage depot with chain-link fence in lush tropical jungle and the generator house...

Did a trip out to see coconut crabs one night and the bioluminescence in the water made the boat look like it was floating on this incredible glowing trail, and there were rather cool fireflies and bioluminescent mushrooms in the jungle too!

People who ran it were awesome value, very helpful, nice & down-to earth, the folks who we were there with were generally extremely good value too, nice crowd and it wasn’t a hardcore diving crowd so very relaxing indeed. I ended up generally doing a dive in the morning and then snorkeling/kayaking/stand-up paddle boarding (most amusing!) with my lovely wife in the arvo. She did two resort dives and loved them, dived two very nice spots and was rather taken with it all, so I think we’ll ease her through an open water course here this summer when it gets good and warm.

I am babbling rather, but it was that good. Definitely going back. Have attached a small assortment of random photos below, apologies for their size...as usual, shot with my old D80 and a polarizer on vivid, no colour post-processing.

Sounds (and looks!) like my Maldives experience :) Damn I'm jealous, it's been far too long since I've been diving in waters like those.
My old man wants to do one more international big game fishing trip while he still can, and I told him when we do it I wanted to double up with some good scuba times. I think I know what destination I'll be voting for!

Beautiful photos man. I hope to head there one day on one of my vacations. Going to Cartagena in November, but will be nothing like this. Need to make my way to Bora Bora, Maldives, Soloman Islands, etc.

That last photo seriously looks fake.

I'm a scuba diver myself man.

To say that I'm jealous would be an understatement

Looks beautiful, I am jealous. I went to Dunk Island in Australia, and the scuba diving there that I did was life-changing. Yours looks even better.

Wow, that looks like an amazing spot for a vacation/honeymoon. I like the airport, wonder if I brought my skydiving gear if they'd let me jump out of that twin otter. :)

If you don't mind me asking, approximately how much was the whole package?

EDIT: Holy crap. Did a search on expedia for flights and even booking 8 months out for next June the price was $3k per person.

He has the luck of getting there in roughly 1000 miles or so.

Those pics look amazing, feel free to post more!

If I visited the Solomons I'd want to check out Iron Bottom Sound off Guadalcanal.

Tons of interesting shipwrecks there.

Ah, that makes more sense. I'd love to go to someplace like this with my girlfriend rather than a much more "touristy" island. I don't think the price for the actual vacation would be too expensive but I can see the airfare being the prohibiting factor.

Anything like this closer to the US?

We still have to fly to Brisbane first, some ~2,300 miles, then you fly to Honiara, then Seghe, but yes, I appreciate that the air fares for Americans are quite steep!

There were two very pleasant American couples there while we stayed (and the place only takes maybe 30 or less people at any one time, so a substantial proportion!), and I believe that Americans generally make up a significant portion of their clientele.

I understand the appeal is the superb diving, the WWII history and wrecks, and also the much less 'touristy/beaten-track' nature of the place. They were certainly really interested in the local people and their culture.

Re price, I believe our package through Dive Adventures was about $3.3k AUD each for flights and transfers from Brisbane, accommodation and all meals for 10 nights. We did stay in a beachfront bungalow which was quite a bit more expensive than some of the other accommodation options, so savings could be made there. Top value imo, rly :)

Some people did go out fishing, and I believe barracuda, wahoo, mackrel, tuna and some variety of snapper were the main catches, although they also get marlin and sailfish on occasion.

It's a cool, cloudy 22'C with rain forecast here in Perth, I suspect the water temp is around 18'C, and all I can think of is diving in the Solomons in 29'C water on pristine coral reefs surrounded by thousands of reef fish...
