outpost and rebates, i dont trust anymore. i suggest looking where the rebate goes and if it's not to them then check the stores that qualify for the rebate.

Well, form specifically says "Fry's Electronics", and it's going to Young America, MN. Seems decent - I've been looking for a cheap video proggie.

Ok, no, I really haven't been looking, but since I've found one, now I'm tempted ;)

EDIT: Anyone know if you can create DivX movies with PS8?

I don't know what a better product is for under $50 as a matter of fact I don't know of a better product for under $300. Basically, you get what you pay for. You pay very little for this, so don't expect very much because it sucks.

Oaf357,

Geeze dude lighten up!! We can't all be studly proffesional video editing gurus like yourself. I have made plenty of cool music videos of my home video with transitions, slow-mo, music, etc... with Pinnacle Studio 7. I'm not quite sure what a $300 program can add to that (probably some better encoding I would imagine - or better support to burn DVD's or SVCD's??), but maybe you could tell me instead of launching your tirade.............. or maybe not.

Cool! Thanks, I ordered a copy. I've been using version 7 and have been very happy with it. Great product for what you pay. I use it for DV capture and editing, conversion to wmv for small email video clips, etc. For MPEG2 encoding for SVCD though, it's TMPGEnc all the way. 2 pass VBR is not something Pinnacle offers. TMPGEnc does a great job of encoding MPEG1/2. Lots of options. Between the two of them, I can do everything I need to.

be warned though, when I added it to my cart it came up as $99. I called and placed the order with a CSR and he rang it up it at the correct price.

I agree with kayaksurfer. I have Athalon 1.4 GHz with 1GB RAM, Win98SE all tweaks, U2W SCSI and IDE DMA133 drives. The software is still sloooooooooow to start and to work with. It cannot read my AVI files with 12 K sampling audio files but does not tell me why. Then I encoded mpg files with TMPMPEG and tried to compose SVCD. The Studio not only crashed but shutdown my PC with it. I do not know what am I going to do with this piece of Studio 8 ***.

Here is my solution to burning SVCD. Capture using virtual dub. Encode using TMPMPG (MPEG 2 480X480). Make VCD using Nero Burning ROM 5.5 this one even has a basic menu making utility.

Did you guys notice that it's now $50.00 - $50 MIR = FREE?! Wow, that's pretty cool. Rebate is good on purchases until 12-31-02. The rebate specifically says you must purchase from Fry's. Now I know (and you know) that Outpost.com IS Fry's, however will Pinnacle Systems get all pissy over this? I can't see how they would, I'm just wondering out loud....

Just thought I would post my opinion on the software since I just finished burning a video I took to svcd. It crashed at first when I installed it, but after the update to 83 from the pinnacle website it's just fine. Here's my thoughts. I havn't used any other video editing software, so I can't compare it to anyghing else.

IT's easy. I wanted something easy and this fits the bill. It has 3 stages, capture, edit and make movie. It captures easily, not much brainwork. (good for me).

It's easy to edit and insert things like transitions from one clip to another, start page, etc.

Very easy to burn straight to dvd, svcd or vcd. I don't have a dvd player yet so I go svcd. Very nice.

I'm very happy with it and don't see myself looking for anything else anything soon. Now you guys need a deal on hollywoodfx pro and you'll be set.

Just picked up a copy. I bought Studio 7 Deluxe just before v.8 came out, so it's good to get my hands on this one without having to pay the $60 upgrade fee. I like v.7, but I use TMPGENC to make XSVCD's and NERO to burn, so we'll see much better this one is than 7.

Stability hints:

Patch it, defrag ALL your disks, use separate HD for capture vs Studio program, compile to disk image and then burn to disk. I could go on and on, but I seem to have a stable S8 installation now.

Oh, biggest tip, measure your free space in Gigs. not Megs! S8 needs a LOT of space for compiling/re-encoding avi's and MPEGs into the correct format for NTSC/PAL.

GREAT FIND!! I grabbed one for $50 - $50 + $5.41 shipping. I've been looking to get the DV version of this, which is bundled with the Firewire card, but for this price, I can buy a firewire card separately!

Thanks!

I have been using the software for a while. It's perfect for non-professional vedio. Simple and easy to use! Got mine from BB a while back for free after PM and MIR. The package comes w/ both 1934 card and a cable linking desktop to dv device.
