Chris Matthews, Mike Wallace and Chris Wallace are all tough, attack dog interviewers. That's their style and it always has been. But all are prepared and don't ask unfair questions. There is a place for interviewers like that, although I generally don't like the style but it serves a purpose-exposing people like Bachmann.

If you want powderpuff interviews, stick with people like Larry King.

Matthews and both Wallaces are greatly preferable to boorish bullies like Bill "Shut Up" O'Reilly. Imus and Howard Stern frequently fall into that category as well.

Are you serious? The goal of all interviewers should be to reveal the truth. Matthews' goal was to create a narrative to smear her by.

Everyone is human and everyone misspeaks. Matthews could have demanded a repeat answer to the fair question "Are you going to investigate Dems for anti-American thoughts?" Instead he did the douchebag move by assuming the truth to that question and two years after the first attack interview following it up with "Who do you plan to investigate?" The premise of the question is false, there was no proper answer to the follow-up - Bachmann made the correct move by not engaging in that pointless "debate", it was a no-win situation for her.

The "fair" thing for any interviewer is to ask the necessary questions to make sure the answers he receives are truth. Matthews' purpose instead is to get people like you to believe & repeat the narratives he creates.

When is redneck racist?

Pretty hilarious thinking someone like Bachmann is for limited government, but if you simply mash the button next to R then we can't expect much from you.

Refresh my memory. Didn't Bachman say that the dems should be investigated? So now that the Repubilicans have the House why is it wrong for him to ask her 'who does she plan to investigate' now? I agree it was unprofessional for him to ask was she in a trance.

I swear, this forum continues to sink to new lows of pathetic partisanship as each day passes. If the statement was made during that interview, then a follow up question is fine. When an unofficial statement is made two years prior, and there has been no evidence between then and now to suggest the statement was made in truth and is her intentions, then I believe Matthews is a jackass for pressing it like he did. Matthews was not seeking truth, he was seeking a talking point to boost ratings.

If you want your memory refreshed, Bachmann was originally talking about the media investigating more into the likes of Ayers & Wright and their relationship with the soon-to-be President. Matthews was able to add enough confusion into the "interview" to turn that into a quote about investigating all liberals.

Memory refresher? Link to the Minnesota Independent
It was on Chris Matthews' show in 2008 that Representative Bachmann called for media investigation not of Ayers, Wright and associates but of her fellow members of Congress:
What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think the American people would love to see an expose like that.
She updated her act in 2009 by promising non-stop subpoenas and investigation of the Obama administration:
"Oh, I think that's all we should do," Bachmann said. "I think that all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another. And expose all the nonsense that is gone on. And it's very important when we come back that we have constitutional conservative leadership because the American people's patience is about this big. So we have to make sure that we do what the people want us to do."
I am, of course, stunningly grateful that you would never stoop to the lows of pathetic partisanship yourself by whitewashing Representative Bachmann's comments...

What is an 'unofficial' vs. 'official' statement? Bachmann said it, that's 'official' enough for me. I still fail to see how it is out of line to ask about it again when now the R's are in position to actually do it.

Sorry, I forgot that "redneck" is a race. I meant no slander towards your ancestry.

LOL...obviously you don't live in it. It includes Saint Cloud, a major college town which isn't exactly a hotbed of right wing extremism... :) So are the 40% who voted for Tarryl Clark misguided Rednecks then? LOL

Also...if you think MN6 is redneck...what about Oberstar's district of northern MN (MN8) on the Iron Range? They had sent him to Congress for 18 straight terms...but finally wised up and retired him.

St. Cloud he he he. The home of Fingerhut. Yea, that's some progressive cosmopolitan city.

LOL...depends who you ask up there.

Essentially, you hit upon the issue here in MN and why we are facing a 6 billion dollar state budget deficit. The urban dwellers really want to see the Twin Cities as a New York, Chicago or LA. But we can't make up for the lack of population density/tax base to justify the "big boy" spending on mass transit, social programs, etc.

Kind of like someone who makes $30K/year trying to live the lifestyle of someone making $100K/year. Sooner or later...it will catch up to them :)

Fingerhut isn't based in St. Cloud, try again.

Hint: Minnetonka. Where all the rich people live.

PS. I live 20 miles from St. Cloud, and it is pretty blue. Not as blue as urban centers like Minneapolis, but I wouldn't call it redneck by any stretch. It would lean blue, and it's surrounding areas would lean red.

I don't understand the significance you attach on "official" versus "unofficial" statments but in this case Bachmann made her threats to launch unamerican type investigations of Democrats (NOT Ayers & Wright) during a speech she gave on the House floor. That's about as "official" as you can get. I suspect you are counting as "official statements" her later quasi-backpedaling and ex post facto qualifications and restatements she made.

An interview between Chris Matthews and Bachmann is like a junkyard dogfight. Queensbury rules don't apply and it's going to be messy. But that's exactly the sort of interviewer needed to elicit the truth about such crazies in public office.
