Hello all,

My wife and I are 6 months pregnant and we are having a tough time finding stores to buy reasonably priced baby things. We are looking for the majors: things like furniture (crib, hutch and changing table), strollers, car seats, bedding and nursing equipment.

Does anyone have suggestions for good B&M or online stores for me to check out? Thanks.

as a kmart employee, i'd like to inform you that we have well priced baby items from formulas to strollers, to car seats to clothing. Give 'em a look...and keep the company alive :)

We didn't buy most of our stuff. It's called baby showers. Get others to buy the stuff you need and you can take back the duplicate stuff and get more stuff you need.

I have to admit we got lucky on the crib though. My brother-in-law built it for us. He built the same one for his kids and later sold it for $800 so I know they can be expensive.

Got a good deal on a changing table at sears of all places.
The stroller/car seat combo came from Baby's R Us, but it was expensive (wife's boss bought that for us).
Bought the mattress for the crib and sheets at Baby's R Us

Anything little stuff we've had to buy though has been from Target or Sam's Club.

Check to see if there are any used baby stores. WHile they don't sell babies they do sell everything to go with babies. Also DO the yard sale thing, my wife was able to pick-up a changing table that matched the crib for 5 bucks!:Q

Go to some stores that carry used stuff to look for swings, little jumper things, walkers and what not. We got our crib at babys r us. When all was said and done it was 1K for everything..crib,chest,mattress,sheets,blankets. We get all our diapers and wipes at costco as well as rice cereal for when your baby is older.

And by all means, like was mentioned above. Hit up the garage sales for clothes. We just sold a ton of our kids clothes at a garage sale.. They go fast...

You are a K Mart employee, but you drive a jag?

yes...jag xj6 and a ford explorer. The jag is either going to be my street rod (thinking about converting it to a 350 small block) or just keeping it as a winter ride seeing as my explorer has a tough time in the snow. Either way, they're just cars. Personally, i'd rather have the cash back in my bank.

i LOVE target...probably the only store i don't mind shopping in, but kmart, for the majority, beats target's pricing (depending on your market).

CongratS!!!!!

fatherhood is GREAT!! my son is going on 15 months :D

anyways.

we got our crib and changing table at walmart... they ain't beautiful heirloom pieces but they are functional and safe.

we buy diapers at Sam's, but Walmart is a good place too.

we bought a lot of stuff second hand, and you will be given a lot of things too.

don't by the little things (i.e. cloths, bottles, and endless supply of crap that is marketed to make you think you GOT to have it). Don't by the big things until you know you will need it. For example, you don't need one of those diaper pail things.... just use a small trash can and scented bags, and take out the diapers everyday.

check out the paper/want ads for used stuff and garage sales are good places too, for little tyke playground stuff (your at least a year away from that though).

good luck!

Yep WalMart rocks! I got my crib there used it on 3 kids and will be using it on the 4th in Dec. It was like $80, and then like $30 for the mattress, they have a great cosco toddler bed as well (to keep in mind for a year or so down the road for like $40)

I got my changing table through One Step Ahead (they have a website), it is awesome as it is also a baby bath and has huge shelves to store diapers, clothes, wipes ect.

For my babies clothes I have an old restored steamer trunk it is great. My older girls I just use those cheap $5 cardboard make yourself drawers and then covered them w/ blues clues material. That way who cares if they get destroyed everytime they open them to pull the clothes out.

I got my double stroller at K-mart as it was the only place that had the pattern I liked. I would say get a double one not a carseat/stoller combo. As then mom already has the extra spot to put her bags when shopping =). Now my triple stroller I got at Burlington Coat Factory and they have some good deals on baby things as well. I browsed online before I went to the store to buy.

I asked people to just give me diapers, saves, lotion, baby soap, infant tylenol, all the little stuff that adds up and that I could care less really about. I like to pick the big stuff myself so I can choose colors, patterns, material, ect. Diapers I have used LUVS on all my babies they are cheap and last longer than sams clubs brand. (btw my girls are 3, 2, 1 new baby due in dec)

If you need any other hints or tips just ask. WE raised our 1st baby while I was pregnant w/ #2 w/ my husband only making like $11,000 and she never suffered for ANYTHING. In fact our kids have enough clothes I could go a month w/o doing laundry and the baby still wears the oldest clothes and people think it is brand new. And we have a whole room w/ nothing but toys. You can have everything and more you just have to know where to invest money and to look for good deals/sales all the time.

Thanks a lot for all the response. Laurie (my wife) and I have check out Burlington Coat Factory as well as BabysRus. I guess I will have to make side trips to Walmart, Target and Kmart. We have a lot of baby's clothes already (Laurie is as good at finding deals on this stuff as I am on Electronics :D), but we are looking at getting the big stuff.

We do have a couple of baby showers coming up, but being Canadians who live in the States it complicates matters. Either our friends are paying a lot more (if we register in the States with exchange) or we are stuck transporting it all back across the border and paying duty :(

My brother and his wife offered us their car seat. They said it was the best one on the market when they bought it (late last year), but that it is a royal pain to install so they recommend installing it and leaving it in the car. I guess this means I will be using a stroller with a travel system. :)

My wife and I are about 2 weeks away from the "day," we got most of our stuff as family gifts/hand me downs/showers, but a place where bought stuff was ToyRUs and they had all kinds of baby coupons right now for anything from like $5 off to 15% off and they are inside the door of the store. Also I agree that 2nd hand stuff on a lot of it is great, most hardly ever gets used at all. Then there is also the way to do the build it yourself ave. too.

Second hand baby stores are a great place to find VERY inexpensive stuff.

If you don't mind asking, sometimes friends who have kids who are like 2-3 years old have tons of left over stuff they don't need.

Whatever you do, don't buy clothes from Baby Gap or other mall stores. Soooooooo expensive, for stuff he/she will outgrow in like 1 month. Target has gotten real nice clothes that look just as nice as, if not better than that overpriced stuff from Baby Gap. Also Children's Palace has super sales, where you can get clothing items for like a few bucks.

As far as diapers, I think that Target and Walmart have them for the best prices (in our area, at least).

Hey, if you live in the MI area, you can have our baby crib for free :) Just come pick it up! We can't find anyone to give it to, and I don't want to throw it away.....

this is the way to go, believe me after 3 kids and my wife owning a Gymboree Play Program, we've seen alot of babie's pass through our lives and your far better off going with used stuff especially for furniture. don't waste your $ on buying a portable play pen they are virtually worthless. for most of this stuff you can usually buy it for pennies on the dollar. buy good quality used furniture (i.e. crib, changing table, dresser, etc.) and use it for the siblings. save your money for clothing and diapers. with clothing get good quality stuff and it will last for future toddlers. for the newborn stuff buy alot of "onesies" (draw string bottom trundle outfits) they are easy to put on and change diapers with them. don't buy alot of outfits for the newborn because they do grow rather quickly and typically you will have things in their drawer that are brand new and they've already outgrown them by the time you get around to trying them on. spend $ on baby blankets. Gymboree makes good quality blankets invest in a few you won't be sorry. good luck your lives will never be the same, enjoy yourselves.
