I don't know of the type of guys you hang around with. But when/if I refer to a girl as a chick, she's not there to hear about it. Secondly, the only double standard I see is that you're allowed to call yourself a "chic" (joke or no joke) but I am not (joke or no joke). So the only double standard I see is yours.

Hahahah! I love attempting to tick-off Feminazis! It pleases me greatly.

:) I'm far from a feminazi - "love, honor, AND obey" will be in my wedding vows. *looks around furitively* Don't tell that to pyonir!

HUH? Did I miss something? Is Pyonir...um are you the future Mrs. Pyonir?

No, it's just a joke. Someone predicted I'd marry nuxx or nawsss from the rallispec forums, to my great horror - so I put myself up for grabs and pyonir came to my rescue. So we're "engaged" while in and around the forums. And if he gets a girlfriend, well, I'm not the jealous type. :)

My husband occasionally refers to me as his 'piece of grade A meat'. He thinks he is complimenting me, so I try not to get offended or annoyed. He doesn't exactly have a gift for words... but I knew that when I married him. :p

Isla, my friend, I'm sure that your Classicly Elegant, yet Modernly Curvaceous figure is only equaled in beauty by the Melodic Chirping of your truly Heavenly Voice. *angel harps play* :)

I'm sure hubby means well. Sometimes we men have trouble not "dragging the club" as we walk. ;)

First, there's no such thing as a pretty fat chick. :)

Secondly, I never refer to girls as "chicks" or "babes" in their presence. I do with friends sometimes use the word "babe" as in "holy sh*t, look at her, she's a babe! **points to girl across the street**"

More often than not, I use other words like gorgeous, hot, cute, sexy, attractive, pretty, etc. The babe and chick trend always bothered me, too.

Only not-so-good-looking girls have problems with guys using words like hottie, chick, and/or babe to refer to a girl.

Yes, we do speak different languages. Sometimes I'm not even sure if we are from the same planet but at least my GF and I have learned to coexist without pushing the wrong buttons too many times.

I seem to be one of very few males who agrees with you on this point, HotChic.
Being called a hunk or man meat or whatever doesn't affect guys the same way it affects girls because they do not spend their entire lives being objectified. So when they are objectified it's easy to take it as a compliment.
But from the day a girl is born she is referred to as pretty, cute, etc., she is constantly being judged by her looks and held up to impossible standards placed forth by the media.

I have female friends who cannot walk down the street without being honked at. Guys would take this as a compliment. For girls it's annoying at best and scary at worst. Guys don't have to worry about being raped if they're outside alone at night, but girls do to the point where they will try to walk on the other side of the street if they see a guy coming on their side. Sadly, it's not paranoia either, it's a fact of life.

I don't think that guys should refer to women as babes or chicks even if they are only in the company of other guys, as it only serves to further the mentality and the practice of looking at women as nothing more than sex toys.

I agree with most of the points you make except one.
Although the media does place impossible standards on how a woman should look, ultimately its up to her to decide whether she will buy into that bull or not.
It doesn't take a bright person to figure out that their (the marketing pukes) motivation is the almighty dollar.
I would also have a healthy bank balance if I had a dollar for every time I heard a woman wearing a short skirt, fake boobs and a low cut top say 'How dare he treat me like a sex object'...
There is something called personal responsibility, and changes in how women are viewed have to start with women.

Now, Babe is a name for a small talking pig, and chick is a baby chicken.

Men have been calling women "babes" since long before that movie came out. It's a compliment. Why do you automatically assume the most degrading meaning of the term?

The term "chick" comes from the Mexican Spanish word chica - a perfectly respectful, friendly word for "girl". It has nothing to do with poultry. It entered our lexicon through the L.A. jazz scene in the early 50's.

As for all that "objectification" of "eye candy" going on, what's so offensive about the fact that men like to look at women? Do you think those "chicks" would really be happier, or better off, if the men of the world were indifferent to them?

The problem is that even if women don't buy into the marketing image of a woman (which is pushed on them from so many different angles including most Teen/Women's magazines which are supposed to be FOR women), most guys do buy into it and judge women by those standards.
It's hard to go against a message you are receiving from all angles.

I understand where you're coming from with the short skirt thing, but even if a woman dresses skanky/slutty and shows a little too much skin, guys should not ASSUME that she is doing it for all of the world. Maybe she's dressing that way for one particular person. Or maybe she's a whore. If it's the former, guys should leave her alone...if it's the latter, most guys should have very little interest in her. I say it's better to assume the former in any case, because no matter how you dress you still don't deserve to be hurt verbally or otherwise.

Where the term has originated from has little to do with what it's meaning is currently.

If men treated women in the same way that women treat men, I think that women would be better off and happier. There's a difference between flirting with a person and degrading them.

Very true, it takes a great deal of inner strength to ignore the media pressure, but I feel thats where we as women fail our daughters.

I agree in theory, but in my 35 years of being a female, I have found that if I act like a bimbo who values my boobs more than my brain then thats how I will get treated but if I act like a person who has respect for myself then respect is what I get. (Although there are always exceptions. :) )

Particularly when one is grasping for something, anything, to get outraged over.

If men treated women in the same way that women treat men, I think that women would be better off and happier.

Nah, they'd just complain that we're not "real men".

Actually, I don't care what anyone calls me, as long as it isn't in that leacherous way, you know, with them breathing down your neck and all close to you, thinking that by calling you a "babe" or "hottie" they have suddenly won the key to your pants. :p I guess I have dealt with too many creepy men, guys who do things like put a cigarette out on your hand when you turn them down politely if they ask you to dance, or ones that think its cute if you blow them off nicely to stand there and yell vulgar things at you and slap their buddies on the back while they chuckle to let a word like babe or chick bother me. Once you have dealt with the really bad ones, the regular ones just don't seem so bad anymore.

;)

Personally, I don?t call girls chick or babe to their faces. But I do behind their back.
Yup.

If you know her name, that's what you call her by, end of story (unless you got pet names for eachother that may or may not include babe or chick ;)). But when it's just you and the guys, it's fair game as far as I'm concerned... you don't say "That's a woman"...you say "that's a friggin hot-ass chick!"
