I do avoid people who are buying into and feeding the machine, though.

I agree that Sir Frederick is a REAL man :) Too bad there aren't more like him...

Skace, I addressed much of what you are bringing up in other posts already, however, I must add this.
Yes, some women treat men like objects and degrade them sexually, etc., etc. So what?
Some black people call white people racial slurs and rob them. Would you suggest that we treat all black people as racist theives based on this fact? No, of course not. You should treat all black people with respect, just as you should treat all women with respect, despite what a small number of people inside the group may be doing.

The potential fact that SOME women like to be called babe or what have you is no good excuse for calling all women (or all women you find attractive) babes.

Using your faulty logic, I can come to a conclusion that I hope you would find quite alarming. There are some men who have chosen to be castrated, for whatever reason. Therefore, men should not complain if we castrate them. You are male, so let's go ahead and castrate you. If you don't like it, you can go to another country, except of course for the minor detail that the majority of countries have taken the same stance on the issue.
My example is extreme, but it drives home the point.

It's rude and I don't do it.

Unless I mean to be rude.

Or if it's a pet name for my sweetie.

Life's funny like that.

I find 'chick' rather endearing. I had a pet chick when I was a kid, but it died after a pest control guy sprayed our house. Samething with 'babe', isn't baby adorable (well at least to the parents)?

How come I did a CTRL+F for "freedom" and it didn't find any matches in this thread. How important do some of you people think freedom of speech is? I think it's pretty damn important. I think people can say whatever the hell they want... if it offends other people, sucks to be them. And just because this is my stance, please don't instantly assume that I am some male-cheauvenist (someone help me out with that one :p) womanizer. That said, if I knew it was offensive to someone I wouldn't say it around them, I'm not sure I even say it (babe or chick) at all.

Three simple words that I'd like to see someone argue against:
FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Your post is irrelevant. Nobody is talking about outlawing the words "babe," "chick" or anything else for that matter.
We're talking about what people SHOULD do, not what they have to do. Besides, with freedom comes responsibility.

I usually use the word "yummy" is that ok?

ie :

GirlFriday, Isla, and HotChic are soooo yummy!

EDIT!

Hehe... I guess I should have read the thread first! I didn't realize it was a serious discussion :p. For reasons mentioned in this thread I never use the word babe, chick, fine piece of tail, etc...
I am actually very bland with my adjectives that describe a woman... my comments are usually "Now that's a nice lookin lady", "She is yummy!" (sorry, I do say that now and again), and "If I had
a swing like that, I would put it in my yard!"... ok ok, I'll be serious for a second... I am not sure guys have to create the euphanism for "attractive woman", the same goes for all the euphanisms for
anything sexual. In my experience these words are most often used in a group atmosphere where the lowest common denominator wins (who usually don't have a great vocabulary).

Sorry that doesn't really answer anything, but I think it was a noble effort on my part :)

Elitism gets you nowhere.

HAHAHA. And just who decides words people SHOULD and SHOULD not use? You, I guess? "With freedom comes responsibility"... very nice and high sounding and all that jazz. Thanks for the lesson, you learned me GOOD.

It's called social mores. When women make up over 50% of the population, AND hold equal status in society, AND there are men that respect them, that is who decides what the social mores are.

At least if you listened to me you wouldn't end up making an ass of yourself.
Let me know when you're done chewing on your foot and I'll help you take it out.

Hey how about next time you post an actual response instead of an empty post wrapped in some more elitism. Where do you draw the line between the reaction being the fault of the person who acted, or the fault of the person who was offended. If I told you your posts offended me, should you stop posting?

Now this is a just plain retarded argument... so you're telling me every single woman in the world finds the words "chick" and "babe" offensive? And that any man who respects women agrees? Gimme a funkin' break.

Your response was to mock me and accuse me of using elitist jargon. Were there any substance to your post I would have responded accordingly.

It doesn't matter whether or not *every* woman feels that way. As long as it's the majority it should be respected. In fact, even if it's not the majority, even if it's a reasonble minority, it should still be respected at least until you know which category that particular woman falls into.
I know one woman where I used to work who used "babe" and "chick" freely. I'm sure she would not have objected to being called a babe or a chick. I know far more women who do object, however, and I don't see why it's so hard for guys to respect their wishes.

P.S. Sorry for the delayed response, I was busy driving from MI to MA

I don't have a problem respecting women, I do have a problem with an entirely subjective standard being applied to a situation in which it doesn't fit. It seems anyone who doesn't agree with this subjective idea of respecting women is being branded as disrespectful towards women. I guess this thread is already deader than dead though. :)

If women do not wish to be called something, and you call them that anyway, that is disrespectful, is it not? If your post had some deeper meaning you'll have to explain further what you meant, as you were rather vague.
