I read few pages of this thread, lured by the unsuspecting title.

You guys are LOL. It's just an internet forum. Jesus christ. Wow. You guys take this so seriously. Both of you mods and hardcore members.

Sometimes you just gotta go outside and hang out with real friends- go snowboarding, grab a drink or watch a movie, to realize this is just all too silly.

I agree since there is already a thread about it in FI. They are just encouraging the lazy people who don't know how to click a link. Car Forums! Fuck that! I have to move my mouse and push a button, NO WAI!

I think L&R is a great success, since people can have legitimate discussions on serious relationship issues there. Some of the topics discussed there definitely would have gotten locked as a YAGT or YART (yet another relationship, though I don't recall those offhand, just making it up). I'd say it balances itself out - less action in L&R, but far more epic fails instead of a plethora of YAGT's with billions of replies.

I do agree that it feels like traffic has slowed down a bit. That comes with having more focused forums. It's great in that people now have places to discuss specific issues, but it also did fracture the ATOT community quite a bit. I'd like to see more action in ATOT (hell, all the forums) just because I want ATF to thrive. I haven't made 14k posts because I thought AT was dull :p I think a bit more free play in ATOT wouldn't hurt, and I agree that locking babe threads or potential babe threads isn't always necessary. If people don't want NSFW stuff during the work day, avoid forums. period. I worked for the govt and never ever visited AT (or any forum) during my work time.

These kind of people aren't interested in Tech enough to actually READ the forum, much less post in it and clickthru ads to buy things. They aren't going to click an ad for gaming ram, or for a video card, they're going to go to store.hp.com or dell.com, or to BBuy and buy an all-in-one package.

SO... when I want car advice WHY should I go to Off Topic??

Because it's "OFF TOPIC" for a bleedin' computer tech forum? Honestly, anything that's not computer-specific should be in OT - yes, HT, Phones, Cars, Relationships.

I've read through all the posts and decided to post my 2 cents.

* Bandwidth costs -- how much is Anandtech (the company) paying for bandwidth? And, can we monitor the traffic to know how much per forum category are the costs? If Anandtech is truly operating in deficit or not making the money the owner wants, then it is up to him and his investors to shut down or mitigate the losses. Also, what is the true amount of loss? If we post "babe" threads in the OT section of the forum, there are no attached graphics of said babes. In fact the only bandwidth hogs on the page are the ads themselves.

* Compulsive Behavior -- C'mon admit it, there are some who like to have things in neat, tidy categories. This is not a mark or slam against any of these people. However, I've noticed people getting really bent out of shape when someone posts outside the "correct" category and those that repost earlier content. I can admit to lightly searching for a topic when I post only to find that I am reposting content. Oops. Also, I admit to posting something in OT than say motherboard hardware, because I feel I can reach a wider audience than the specialized audience. Why? Because some of my questions have to do with general populations' thoughts instead of someone who may have analyzed a particular instance. So while I am not posting in right area technically, I am indeed looking for responses from a larger audience.

* So, what to do? -- I have noticed several changes with other forums, not all good or bad, but changes nevertheless.

: Make Ads go away by charging a monthly/yearly fee for a private ad-free viewing. How is that doing? I don't know but you could ask Phoronix.com about that.

: Make posts or searches invisible to lurkers. You have to be a member to see the fourms and while a google search may turn up a cached thread or two, it does not allow you to see existing content. In looking at the first point, bandwidth usage, could we check to see if most of the bandwidth going out is to forum members or lurkers coming in from a web search? Maybe this might help.

: Paying for the right to post content. Many have this model but I've noticed these sites are becomming marginalized and more open sites are taking viewership away. But, it is up to the owner to decide, pay or not?

In the end, I would like to see less control. I do know that in the largest scheme of things humans tend to be herd-like and self policing more so than any artificial control. So if we had minimal control would we see a trend over time for an overabundance of babe or "versus" threads? In the short term you'd see a spike but over time, probably not.

The big question in all this is: is Anandtech (the company) really losing money by having an OT forum? If so, then what is the mission statement of this company on forums? Are they meant to generate cash or are they a loss leader and meant to be for community service? Only the owner can answer this.

minor tangent. this is just more proof than even though women claim to think about sex as much as men, we all know they're totally lying. Do they have a thread over at the ivillage or lifetime channel forums (if there are any) debating what to do about the recent proliferation of "hunk" threads? I doubt it.

This quote struck me as a little odd. Now, I haven't been a member of these forums for all that long but I've been reading Anantech for a good 10 years now. This is not cnet, it is never going to cater to the SUV driving mother you speak off. It isn't designed too. To flesh that out all you have to do is read one article on the front page.

They are incredibly detailed and delved deeply into the technical specifications that the housewife wouldn't care about. If a husband told his wife, "I want a new videocard for Christmas" and she goes to research on the internet, Anandtech will tell her "Card X has new pixel shader technology, uses twice as many stream processors, and here is a graph that compares it to 10 other cards while a site like CNET will tell her, "Card X is faster and quieter than Card Y. Here is a chart comparing Card X with two other cards. We give Card X a 8/10 and Card Y a 5/10."

Which do you think will be better for SUV mom? In the future, which site do you think she will return too. If Anandtech really wanted to target the non-PC literate mainstream as their bread and butter, the articles would be written more in line with something like a CNET. I would never blame Anand for expanding his audience, as I believe the real hardcore PC audience is dwindling (as the driving force behind most upgrades, PC gamers, are either going toward consoles or less demanding games such as WOW) and if he wants to do that, getting rid of the OT and Social forums (or worse, charging for them) would be a huge mistake.

How does that relate to OT? Well, there are two types of people that frequent forums. Using AVSForum as an example, the one question poster (Hey guys, I heard about this site from a friend, which Plasma should, I buy/why do i have black bars still/etc) and the hardcore enthusiast (the lifers on AVS who discuss bitrates on Blu Ray discs and the technical details of building a Home Theater). AVS does not have an off topic forum, so the community that has been built there is exclusively built from the hardcore crowd. The one and done crowd disappear until they have a new question to ask sometime in the future.

What the social forums do is build a community of a diverse group of people. Not everyone that posts on ATOT is a hardcore computer nerd (granted the percentage is very high) and many of the people who post in OT don't even venture into the tech forums on this site. This has two effects, first it keeps the more casual one and done user involved in the site (I know I visit a LOT more since I registered for the forums) and it helps ATOT branch out into areas where it would have a tough time competing.

Again, using AVS as an example. If someone wanted to know of a website to go for HDTV information, 99/100 people would say AVS before they said the HT forum on anandtech. Now take a guy like YoYo, resident HT expert on anandtech. When a member of ATOT wants to post a question about HT, he knows there's this Jello guy on the forums that knows his stuff and he doesn't bother to visit AVSforum. That's an extra page view for AT Forums, an extra eye on a banner, that wouldn't have existed if YoYo did not exist in AT land.

Maybe YoYo has run an ad blocker since day one, maybe he has never clicked a banner ad, but I think it would be FOOLISH to say that he has not put a couple of extra bills in Anand's pocket. I don't mean to single out YoYo, there are guys like him in EVERY subforum of the site (CPA during tax time is another example), and these guys retain users on the forums and the website and ultimately put more money in Anand's pocket.

If I'm not mistaken, that is the ultimate goal here, isn't it?

The forums will never be what they were, the internet has matured, Anandtech forums have become a river that's a mile wide & an inch deep.

Looks pretty at first, but to get any depth, you have to go elsewhere.

"Change of Culture" anyone? I got my ass kicked back then when these forums were on the For Sale block. OH...was that my outside voice?

But they weren't sold...but their "soul" went away anyway.

I've been a regular contributor (i.e. sharing valuable information) and part-time neffer here since (see icon, left).

I've also been an active member on a few other forums, both computer, tech and non-tech related since about that same time (2001-ish).

If the forum is free and open to anyone, its' subject to the whims of the masses. Not saying that's RIGHT or CORRECT, but that's the way it is. There are many other forums that don't tolerate any tomfoolery. You either stomp on the dick or you don't. No waffling allowed.

If ATOT becomes a paid forum, I would expect two sub-forms: SFW and NSFW...AND very stringent enforcement b/t the two. NO second chances. How about a sticky at the top of both forums SHOWING "THIS will get you banned, this will not." Complete w/graphic examples of such threads. I.E. A spread-eagle picture of a hot 18-year old Russian chick wearing a schoolgirl skirt and in the other thread, a picture of an Intel motherboard.

Seriously. I'm a black and white person. In all the years I've been posting on AT, this has been a GRAY forum at the whim of the mods...who have been "a bit biased" at times.

this is ATOT. what were you expecting, seasoned professional commentary ?

it's not like you're going to hear more intelligent commentary at a French cafe where everyone iis sitting around smoking Gitanes.

but we can still show pictures of Babe the Pig ~
