If you can be interested in ink jet, the HP OfficeJet K-5400 base model is going quite cheaply (about $100. shipped to most places). It is color and comes with a starter set of cartridges that lasted me about 5 months before one showed signs of needing replacement (as usual the warning was way early so I got another month out of the starters). Now HP brand replacement tanks (4 separate tanks, one for each color) is VERY expensive, but also there is more ink (several times more) in each tank than most others. OTOH, I got a set of refillable tanks for it on fleaBay and I'm still on the first fill which was in the tanks and hold more than even the XL size of the HP tanks.
. When you go to refilling yourself, then the cost drops dramatically. I'm sure this will be down in the laser range in cost per page even laser that refills their own toner. Plus I can use top brand ink for future refills and still have very low consumables costs. It does have a few drawbacks: it is large and noisy, it doesn't do two-sided printing well without the duplexing accessory which about doubles the price (Staples is the only place that sells the DN version which has the duplexing unit without the extra paper feed tray and that has frequently been on special lately at around $140. or $150. - otherwise you have to get the DTN which has the duplexer, second input tray and network connection and gets up there in price - techonweb seems to have the full boat model at the lowest ~$170.+sh right now).
