Wife took ring in to get it cleaned. Woman at the store said that within a year she should have the prongs replaced. The ring is platinum if that makes any difference.

your choice.. Loose the stones or replace the prongs... My jeweler does this for free -- so why not do it?

from what i remember platinum is more malleable compared to white and 14karat gold, it may be true if she wears it daily.

Hard to know without looking. I'd bring to another jewelry store for a second opinion.

definitely support "second opinion". Especially in light of reviews that show some fairly high profile jewelry merchants, will swap out high value gems for low value gems, when people bring jewelry in for repair or cleaning. Good idea to have the valuable jewelry appraised with written description. If someone is mentioning your ring mountings being loose, i'ld be a bit concerned that the original gem may have already been swapped. Hope this isn't the case for you.

Platinum is less malleable than gold. It takes longer to wear down platinum than gold.

second opinion sounds like a good plan.

furthermore, you can buy a home jewelry cleaner. very simple. there are so many available.

A home jewelry cleaner won't fix broken/worn prongs!

My mother has had the prongs on her ring replaced at least once.
Its much cheaper to have them replaced than the stone.

But how do you know it was broken in the 1st place?

All very good points. I'm always worried that someone will swap out a stone. I doubt we would ever know. It has been appraised with but I'm not sure to what detail they measured the stones (i.e. F, VS1, etc). I guess having it laser marked is the best way but then I guess the people who do the etching could always swap stones.
