Is it possible to have "dead pixels" on the Nook's e-Ink screen?

I just opened up my new Nook and after examining it, I see two black dots w/in half an inch of each other near the center of the screen / a little to the left of the center of the screen.

Do they interfere with reading? Maybe if you grab one of the free e-books and have a page where the dots screw up the text it'll help with getting it exchanged.

Maybe while it's brand new, they'll give you a new one instead of a refurb.

When reading they look like periods at the end of sentences.

Not a problem now. Called B&N and customer service is sending me a new one. They told me that since I'm w/in the return period, I get a new one w/o using up my advanced exchange.

I didn't even buy it from them either.

So I've had my Nook for a few days now and I'm diggin it. There's a few little quirks but overall it's worth it at the price drop. I got the wifi version which seems to be just fine. I can't imagine ever missing the 3G part of it all, especially for $50 extra.

Is there any way to increase the contrast? The eink screen on mine seems very light sometimes. Happens when I have a book open or reading RSS feeds with Trook or even when the browser is open and a site is displayed.

Does the Kindle have better contrast than this?

How light is it? Mine is pretty much like reading a paperback (black on a kind of a light grayish background).

After listening more closely, the high-pitched noise is coming from the charger when the Nook is plugged in. It's not a loud noise, but it is audible when the room is quiet.

The one I have now is a replacement. The very first one I purchased had a couple of dead pixels. Called them to replace that one and they said they'd send me a new one w/o using up my one advanced or warranty exchange.

I'm considering just returning it and going with the new graphite Kindle DX.

First I've heard of dead pixels on one of these devices. This is definately not the norm. I'd still definately recommend the nook over the kindle.

I searched the NookTalk, MobileReader, and B&N forums and others have returned ereaders as well because dead pixels.

If the graphite Kindle DX really does have 50% better contrast than the Kindle 2 and the Kindle 2 has the same eink screen as the Nook, then I'm switching.

Interesting development, it seems that I can drain the batteries on a nook at record speeds. It appears that my normal reading speed can sap the life out of the device in less than 2 days, even with wireless turned off. I called B&N and asked them if that was normal. To paraphrase:

Me: The battery on my nook lasts less than 2 days.
Them: Make sure and turn off WiFi.
Me: I did.
Them: What are your reading habits?
Me: Well, I had 2 days off so I re-read the Dresden Files.
Them: All of them?
Me: Yeah.
Them: Wow... That's probably outside of normal operation.
Me: It's normal for me.
Them: You might want to buy another battery.
Me: How will I charge the empty one while I'm using the nook?
Them: You won't, but at least you can have a spare for emergencies.

Anyway, I am enjoying the thing, and it works pretty well. I just wish it had more juice.

Charge it completely and hold off from reading for a week, see how long it lasts. If the battery is fine, it should still have juice after a week or two.

I'm sure this is the case; but do you have the lcd screen set to turn off after a minute or so?

How many hours of use did you get?

As an aside, just started the Dresden Files, pretty good so far. 🙂

Can the Kindle handle Japanese/Chinese ebooks? Also, can you purchase those ebooks from electrionic sites overseas?

Maybe ask this in a Kindle thread or make your own thread, as this is about the B&N nook. Not that you won't get an answer, but it may be quicker that way and it'll keep this thread on topic.

I got ~16 hours of use before the low battery warning came on. That's probably not too bad, since I turn pages so often. I have the LCD turn off after 5 sec, which I think is the fastest setting, and I have the brightness turned down to 25%. Also, I try to alternate buttons, to keep from wearing out the right side too quickly.

Yeah, I'm a fan of Harry, he's the John McClane of the fantasy genre.

Just got one last week and I love this thing. My favorite feature is swiping the screen to turn the page. I don't think I could ever use a kindle now, as it lacks that feature.

I wish publishers would actually proof-read their ebooks though.

I have a $100 gift card to Barnes and Noble, I'm thinking about getting one of these...

Hmmm... $100 for the 3G version.

I'm really diggin mine, and all I have is the wifi version. I still don't think most people would find the 3G all that useful unless you KNOW you'll be caught in a non-wifi area without a way to upload books via the cable. I personally am glad I saved $50 on it as I have yet to be missing it.

The only way I could see it being useful is if you do newpaper subscriptions on it.

Thinking of getting one of these since my birthday is coming up next month. How has it performed for people also did you guys/gals get it with the 2 year plan?(accidental etc)

for the price it can't be beat right now.
