B&N Market, no Android market. This has been known since we heard Froyo was coming!

Yep, they never stated they were bringing the Android market. It was prominent in a couple different rumors, some rumors that even persisted after B&N released an official statement that spelled out their future plan for different releases, which also spelled out their whole Apps/Market approach.

I'm still very annoyed that B&N hasn't brought Magazines to the Nook for Android app, and apparently it's impossible to hack the stock nookColor Library apps to port them into some ROM to be ran on the nookColor.

Damn you B&N. With this nookColor of mine, I plan to continue to pay you the price to read a few magazines I've liked. So I would like to abandon your official software, I'm still going to use your services and you'll get the same amount of money from me one way or another. And I already own the device.

I've heard they may bring the feature to their Android app, and that would be very nice of them. I want CM7 on this thing stat, but not until I can use every single feature I am currently using on my rooted stock nook. And I really don't want to go through the hassle of dual-booting. The whole of this tablet is to have it ready to do what I want as soon as I pick it up. I mean, I basically keep it in sleep mode for a couple days at a time on each battery charge, and just turn wi-fi on and turn the backlight almost to zero when using it in my house. It's my bathroom reader, cookbook, and time-waster. :)

Not only did they not say they would include the full market, I remember them specifically saying that they wouldn't. This should not be a surprise to anyone.

Just got it set up the way I like it though, so I'll be hard pressed to update and re-root again.

Technically they can't include Android market - Google won't allow it on non-cell devices by default. This came around when Archos started releasing the Android PMP/Tablets.

Pretty exciting update for regular folks. When I show off my Nook Color my three go-tos are:

1. Flash
2. Angry Birds
3. Page turn animations on the Android Nook app

Now that the default install comes with those three, I no longer have to finish my demonstration with "but only us hackers get all this stuff, as it is from the store its a boring book reader."

Another good thing is that those who are hooked on the "official" Nook Color app now can enjoy things only Froyo has like Flash and (once its rooted) Opera Mobile. In the long run it seems the only thing missing long term from the default ROM is bluetooth (which has terrible range so it probably isn't too useful for some people) and the general responsiveness of Gingerbread. It has been said already that once the new update is rooted overclocking kernels will be available.

For those of us who bought the Nook Color to be a tablet, our big benefit is that hopefully once the sources to the new updated kernel are released we will have working sleep in CM7 builds. Work was already being done on an updated kernel, hopefully this will accelerate the pace.

So good job B&N. I will never use this new update of you all on my Nook Color, but I appreciate all the hard work!

I'm underwhelmed with the B&N market. I'm even more underwhelmed by not being able to sideload the Amazon market (though this doesn't surprise me in the least).

Agreed. Within a week there will be a proper root. The only issue holding it up is apparently B&N really hacked up the framework in the new update.

With that said, all I want from the update is its kernel:

B&N Froyo Kernel + CM7 = ultimate Nook Color ROM

have you tried phiremod? its a customization of CM7 which i really like. one thing that has really been pissing me off lately is standby battery usage. I used to be able to standby for over a week. now I think its less than three days.

I don't personally use phiremod because the development moves so quickly and phiremod is an attempt to create a stable ROM at random points in development (for example I don't know if the new version even has the 1.3GHZ kernel yet). It is good for regular people that just want to use a stable CM7, but I am trying to keep up with development to help test things and to get new features first.

The stock OSes have working sleep, but CM7 doesn't (never did). That is why I am excited about B&N releasing the source code to their new kernel so that it can be ported to CM7 and we can enjoy sleep...
