First they had that deal where MS says Intel strong armed them into saying Intel integrated graphics were "Vista Compatible" (sure just turn off Aero!) and now SP1 has the ubiquitous 945G on the "incompatible list.

Intel 945G/Vista owners p3wned

Sheesh- what next?!

I saw this news article and thought it was an interesting motherboard post (how often is Intel incompatible with anything?) but apparently the author (and myself) were unaware of a later driver that fixes the incompatibility. (thanks Silent Running!)

As the saying goes "Nothing to see here" and "My apologies". 🙂

Wouldn't really apply to you, it's just integrated graphics from intel that is affected (specifically ones with a certain driver version).

Both of my 780i machines were trashed by sp1 and I had to wipe them both and start over. SP1 took out system restore and rendered the dvd vista tools unable to repair the system. One of them was just over a week old, a new build and it was still trashed. I spoke to ms tech support. Now they want me to remove all hardware and disable everything and try installing sp1 using the standalone package. No thanks ms I'll just wait for sp2. By then they should have everything sorted out.

That's odd. SP1 didn't affect my 790i in any adverse way.

Nor a couple I know about. Methink the above poster has an incompability somewhere or insists on using a certain app which trashes it.

so what's the verdict? if we had nVidia chipsets we wouldn't have a problem?

Considering its a specific chipset (note the lack of plurality in the word I use as opposed to the OP) and a certain range of drivers (so even the chipset in question isn't totally borked), I'd say someone needs to loosen up a smidge

I think the verdict is that if you're paid and required to use NV chipsets you'd post about all the little problems with the competition's chipsets. 😉

All while ignoring the myriad problems with NV chipsets. Latest problem with my NV chipset (adding to a long list) is a compatibility problem with Samsung F1 drives.

I've loaded Vista SP1 on a number of different systems including Athlon64 X2 on nForce 4 Ultra(64 bit vista) , Athlon 64x2 on nForce 6150 (32 bit vista) , a Dell system with core 2 duo 6600 and Q965 chipset (64 bit vista), Dell Lattitude 630 with core 2 duo 7300 and (I think) intel 945 gm and integrated graphics, and an HP laptop with core 2 duo 7200 and intel 945 GM and integrated graphics. Both laptops with 32 bit vista. Not one of these has had any problems.

One thing to note that may be different for some of you: None of my vista installs were upgrades from XP - they were clean installs of vista. The nForce 4 ultra system was the original RTM vista with SP1 applied when it came out. All the others were a format c:\ and clean install of vista with SP1 integrated (ah the joys of being on a volume license with software assurance). So perhaps its because I'm doing fresh installs with SP1 integrated but everything I've tried it on so far works fine.

On my HP laptop, vista sp1 actually picked up all the hardware better than the same machine did with an XP sp2 install. With xp, I had to do the F6 and put in a driver floppy routine to get it to recognize the onboard intel sata controller. Not so for vista.

On the nForce systems there were no problems at all. It even recognized the onboard nForce NIC whereas with XP I used to have to load the driver for that after the fact.

vista with service pack 1 is working fine with the system in my signature. i also did clean install with integrated DVD though. i always try to stay away from upgrading with a service pack. to many bad things can happen

since my previous post, i noticed that the graphics driver on my HP laptop was not the most recent. so I downloaded the newest from Intel and installed it. This resulted in system crashes during video playback. So I went to the HP web site and downloaded the version they were recommending and installed that. That completely fixed the problem. so there may be some kind of driver compatibility issue going on there. but I guess with integrated graphics there is no no point chasing the latest driver anyway. Guess Ill stick with the HP recomended drivers for this system.

For my desktop systems, I didnt mention before that they are also running nVidia graphics. The nForce 4 ultra has a 7900GS card and the 6150 is using its onboard graphics. On both of those I used the latest WHQL certified driver from the nVidea web site

Intel chipset, not chipsets according to the article. Is any other chipset other than 945G affected? If not, the title is misleading, IMO.

The title isn't just misleading, it is wrong.

Microsoft has said that Vista SP1 won't work with "a small number of device drivers." The list, however, includes drivers for an Intel chipset that's found in thousands of PCs and laptops.

The affected chipset is Intel's 945G Express series, which is used in computers from virtually all major system vendors. It's also found on standalone motherboards sold by Asus. The 945G Express chipset driver versions between numbers 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403 won't work with Vista SP1, according to Microsoft.

The current driver available from Intel is:

7.14.10.1437

This thread is false and misleading.
