Sennheiser HD-280 Pro - Circumaural Closed-Back Professional Monitor Headphone

Excellent choice for an entry-level, sealed, circumaural set of cans. Folding nature also makes them quite portable.
  • Manufacturer product page listing here.
  • Review involving the HD 280s here (should you be unfamiliar with the model).
Free shipping (choice of UPS Ground, USPS Priority, or USPS First Class) and no tax in states other than New York.

Silver version priced at $99.99, but presently out of stock.

A suitable amplifier brings out the true quality of this budget set of cans.

Edit: Currently in stock at ZZF for $81.00 shipped.

Silver version priced at $87.50 shipped.

sweet price on some VERY good headphones. you won't find better sounding (or more comfy) headphones for anywhere near $80

The Grado SR 60/SR 80 line fits in the entry level category as well at or around the same price point, but of course either of the Grados are of the open, supra-aural design.

It greatly depends on what one needs and (to a greater extent) one wants. The Grados are an excellent entry-level audiophile choice as well (and dependent on the source and amplifier, can actually sound a bit better).

The general online "sale" price runs around $100 for either. Anything under $80 (or 20%+ off) constitutes a fairly good deal.

These are great cans, I've been using them at work every day for almost a year. Excellent sound for the money.

If you don't mind holding your nose to order at ecost (inventory tracking sucks, bogus handling fee, etc.), Sennheiser's can often be found cheaply there. I think I picked these up for around $65 shipped.

I want to jump on this, but I don't own an amp to power these. can anyone recomend a cheap amp for these? and what about cheap input cables?

I've had a pair of these for a few years, still sound great. These are also really good in a semi-noisy environment, they block out external sound pretty well when you're listening to music or playing games. Only problem is mine started to have some cracking on the headband after about a year and a half. Its never finally broken anywhere, just some cracks here and there in the plastic...which I found others complained about when I googled the problem. Nothing major though, this is still an excellent deal on some sweet headphones.

u def don't need an amp for these headphones, they work perfectly fine without one. even with one, there isnt alot of benefit with these.

I too have these headphones and they are a great set for plane flights, public places and private listening - excellent response across the board. Definitely worth the price.

You'll likely need enumerate to a more definitive budget than merely "cheap", as the term can translate to quite a wide variety of price points.

Give a range, and I imagine users could give suggestions - from a DIY project or kit up to a few hundred dollars or so.

While an amplifier is indeed not necessary, the audiophile quality of these budget cans really shines with a good source, and an amplifier.

They will sound quite fine however without one (note the original statement above was that a "suitable amplifier brings out the true quality of this budget set of cans").

Updated the original post concerning stock conditiions of both B&H Photo and ZZF.

Thanks OP! I picked up a pair of the black ones from B&H the other day. My cheapie pair of headphones died, and have really been wanting to try out a set of Sennheisers. They should be here Tuesday!

Good deal...just picked up a pair. Hmm...are they really a pair when they are connected as a unit. Well, they will be replacing my Sennheiser 433s which were too uncomfortable e because they pressed too strongly against my ears. This will be a first with closed-ear but it sounds like they get very positive reviews.

Ok, let me be more "enumerant".

when I say "cheap" I mean something for around 50 bucks or less. For example, I'm considering these:

http://www.wwbw.com/Rolls-HA204-Headphone--Distributor-i77104.music

However I have no frame of reference for these products and others like them, So I don't know what a "good" amp is, or even what to look for in one. I want something that can help me get the most from these headphones without breaking the bank. I

Same here - I have pieces of plastic coming out of the headband, but they still sound fine.

Edit: I've had them for 2+ years.

I just bought a silver pair from zipzoomfly for $87. To my surprise when they arrived on one of the cups it says they're 64ohms! Sure enough, I went to zzf and bhphoto sights and in both specs it said they're 64ohms! I thought people here said that current ones only come in 50ohm specs? Should I return these? I think I need an amp for these, because of high ohm and I'm not willing to spend 200 on a headphone amp.

Uh..no. The diff between 50 and 64 isnt large anyway. 64ohm headphones work just fine/well without an amp. Now some headphones are in the 200+ range and they certainly need amps, but not these.

But why 64? They're supposed to be 50! Anyway, a little dissapointed, I listened a little bit to music and I don't know if it's my mind playing with me now or what now that I noticed they're high ohm, but I don't think they sound much better than my crap old ones. Bass, seems to be better, but highs are nothing special and sound about the same. Maybe it's also my onboard audio. Who knows, maybe it can't power these very well. For $90 I was expecting more.

Dude, but doesn't matter that they aren't 50! You need to get that out of your head...and on the Sennheiser website the specs say 64, so I don't know where you got 50 from. Still, I don't know why you care so much...impedence is hardly a determining factor in the SQ (althought it does matter when going from say a 32 ohm to a 300ohm headphone since the one with the lower impedence, 300, will be more receptive to amping).

Which headphones did you have before?

I don't know where I got that 50 from, I think I've seen multiple posts here at anand stating how new ones are 50ohm and are supposed to be even better without amp. These are my old crap cans, they're 32ohm. I played around with hd-280s some more and there's no question about it, their bass slaughters those cheap ass cans, no comparrison. When a grenade goes off in AA near me my whole eardrum vibrates now, guns sound meatier ect. Highs are only slightly better I think.

One of my gripes though is how tight they are, but maybe they will loosen up with time.

Another gripe is coiled cord. I hook up my headphones to the back of my pc and this thing has to stretch to get on my head. Will have to go and buy extension at radio shack, I would much rather preferred straight, longer cord.

Now if only I could manage to hide these from my younger brother. He eats through a pair of headphones in about 2 months. Usually it's the plastic breaking around the cans. He's too rough with this stuff when he puts them on or takes them off.
