I have a question about BET (Black Entertainment Television). Now we've all heard the argument that there would be an uproar if there was a WET (hehe, funny name). And we've all heard the defense that whites have have every other channel (ala CMT). Irregardless, the question I pose is this:

Doesn't the naming of the channel further instigate segregation/racism rather than unification. I understand BET is basically just a channel that plays urban/rap/hip-hop music, which many white people enjoy. However, the naming of the channel is the problem. Obviously there would be a problem if a channel was named White entertainment television, regardless of the content. If you changed the CMT channel to White music channel there would definetely be a problem, even though the content stays the same. Its all in the message the channel is sending based on its name.

I have no problem with BET itself, and I enjoy watching it from time to time. However, I feel a different name would be more fitting. Specifying its for black people (regardless of content) just creates more racial tension and does nothing to solve the problem. What gives?

This is off topic, but you know what pisses me off? Blacks always pulling the race card. Like the congress woman who punched a security guard who followed her and grabbed her arm.... and then tried to say that she was the one who was assaulted, and called for an investigation based on racial discrimination. Yes, I'm sure he wouldn't have cared at all if you were white and unfamiliar looking (new hairstyle) and running past the security checkpoint. Fvck that.

I tend to agree, but I don't really want this topic to degenerate into a discussion about that, as we already have a thread on it.

Instead, Im more interested in the naming alone of the channel. Clearly it is going to serve as a segregator (is that a word?) rather than a unifier of races. So why do it? Do you want there to be continued segregation (as a black person?) if not, why make a channel that clearly segregates blacks from everyone else?

Whites don't "have every other channel" because no channel is marketed specifically toward whites in the way that BET relates to blacks. I think it's a bunch of crap.

I've heard a lot to support that notion. Many many years ago I used to watch 10x and park but now the music is so bad that I can't stand it.
 
Actually, it would be great if they could just pour all that crap into one channel and keep it out. Dont matter to me though, I dont have cable anyways.

Although I'm not black (and why you would ask for just a black persons opinion is ridiculous to me and seems almost to prove your point "only black peoples opinions matter"), I think the whole idea of having a channel devoted soley for black people is stupid. Why would you (as the black race) want to segregate yourselves to just one channel. It's the same reason that "Black History Month" is stupid. Why limit are you limiting your history to just one month (and the shortest one at that)? Why can't you celebrate the achievements of black individuals every month? Morgan Freeman gave a great interview to 60 Minutes a couple months ago about this same topic and as a white man I found it very enlightening.
 
i hated it when International channel changed to AZN. WTF is AZN? wtf? Put it back to International Channel. The three letters "AZN" is just stupid.
 
I have a black guy avatar so..................I think the "name" is just outdated but would be hard to change. IMO in the beginning it was a good idea and served the role of both giving recognizing there were no blacks on TV and representing the "culture". Today, at least to an extent, it decides the culture and seems to somewhat isolate its viewers from reality. Probably a wrong assumption as the last time I watched it was ~ 5-6 years ago.

Of course if you changed the name what would it be? MTV/2 ?
