B-52 model crashing

The B52 can not bank worth a darn.

That model in the fisrt sequence pulled a fairly steep left bank after take-off.

The crash sequence looks like they banked to sharply and lost lift.

R.I.P. to a beautiful model. 🙁 That thing was a work of art. I don't think I've ever seen one that large before. I would love to have witnessed it in person.

Reminds me of some pictures I saw of this guy who built a giant model WWII Japanese battleship that he could actually fit inside and pilot. It was very well done and took him years of work. Too bad I forgot the link.

Now that would be interesting to see!

I know, and it was, but I couldn't even begin to recall where I found it . 🙁

i dunno, it just looked like it was going rather slow. does that thing have the same thrust/weight ratio as the real b52? if its weak it might stall real easy right?
Keep in mind that it's only a model. I've seen flight videos of that plane before. It looked like it was operating normally. It appears to be going slow, but that's only because it's wingspan is fairly large. It's actually pretty close to an exact reduced scale of the actual B52. Large models fly slow....the larger models are actually more stable and easier to fly too. That's why I was surprised the idiot that had the controls screwed up like that. You'd think they'd be more careful with such an expensive plane.

The coolest video I saw of that plane showed the exhaust trails behind it... Pretty cool looking.

it just seemed to be a rather extreme turn, bleed off way too much speed. controlling something that big and fast from a poor vantage point like that is rather difficult i bet. heck when i had a rc car and it got far away i could barely really control it and it was on the ground😛

BTW, here's the real thing that DonVito referred to:

FYI, the other footage in that clip was of Lt Col Arthur "Bud" Holland flying way below the minimum-authorized altitude during a mock bombing run at the Yakima bombing range. He was supposed to stay above 500 feet, and was below 30 in that clip. This was only one of several reckless and stupid maneuvers he had engaged in prior to crashing that B-52. Here is an interesting paper on Lt Col Holland and the failure among his leadership to control him or ground him.

Interestingly, this crash happened the same week A1C Dean Mellberg, who had just been discharged for mental health reasons, came to the Fairchild AFB hospital with a MAK-90 rifle and shot 23 people, killing 5. The Wing Commander felt that the base needed to go on with its usual activities nevertheless, to demonstrate that the base wouldn't let the actions of a lone lunatic affects its day-to-day operations, and so airshow preparation continued as usual. The B-52 crash happened 4 days later, during an airshow rehearsal.

is that the same aircraft that was posted here not too long ago? this one looks painted while the other was unpainted.

Yep, it's the same one.

Was the only one.

I wonder how this scale Concorde handles?

I'm sure can easily afford to build another.

The video is down... the site was suspended.
I missed seeing the crash 🙁

Anyway.. I'll bet a majority of the cost was in the engines, electronics, and motors. I'll bet a lot is salvageable.

wow finally saw the video, OUCH!

Link

it looks likes a gust of wind hit it, or the pilot lost radio contact with the plane. Sucks balls to say the least. Looks like a lilliputian plane crash
