AXIA 1 GHz @ 1.4 ... 3DNow! problems?

ok, i have been running my new AXIA athlon 1 GHz @ 1.4 with very few problems up to this point, but today i was trying to run FlaskMPEG with the Athlon optimizations (running with 3DNow instructions) and i hit a little problem. see, the rig normally runs 32 deg idle and 50 deg C with full, full load. but when i ran a full 3DNow load, it crapped out at 48 deg C and rebooted. went back and tried it again, same thing. did everything i could, but whenever it hits 48 deg C, it reboots. now i'm running FlaskMPEG with the only the MMX op and it is over 50 deg C and totally stable! in fact, i'm writing this post with my compunurse displaying 50.2 deg C. this is madness... do the athlon chips have a very durable x86 + MMX core, able to withstand 50+ temps, but the 3DNow parts of the chip not as strong, and only able to go to 48 deg C?

i would really appreciate any insights you may have. anyone else get this problem, heard of it, or know what to do? note: i'm getting a bigass delta 6800 rpm fan for my hedgehog... maybe that will keep the temp under 48 deg C.

You have a cooling problem, but I think you already know that. A Heatsink is no better than the case air that goes away from it. You're on the right track, but make sure you have a "wind" going thru the case. 🙂

you must rember that the temrature on a socket a is messured from the back of the core. so consevably, a portion of the core is geting much hotter than you suspect when you run 3dnow instructions, hence the stablity problems. what kind of motherboard temp do you have and what kind of case and case cooling?

ok, here is what i have posted currently under "my rig"

Cooling accessories:
Copper Hedgehog with 60 mm Sunon fan
Arctic Silver II thermal compound
Front and rear 80mm Sunon case fans
Antec hard drive fan
Antec fan card (double fanned)
Machine-rounded IDE cable
Machine-rounded SCSI cable
Hand-rounded floppy cable

the case is an inwin S500. In addition, i upgraded the chipset fan to a ChromeOrb with Arctic Silver II. I have ordered a delta 60 mm fan (6800 rpm) to replace the sunon (5200 rpm). via hardware repors a motherboard temp of 29 deg C, and independently i confirmed this with my compunurse.

a big problem is that i am using every available slot/drive in the case. the hard drive fan is obstructed by a hard drive. there are two more 40 gb HDs in the system, as well as a DVD and a burner. got SCSI, IDE, and power cables there (albeit rounded). i would love to get a full case, but i don't have room to put it in my bedroom!

all things consedering, your case temp is very good. the delta will have more of a chance of doing the trick than a bigger case anyway with those temps. as i said before, the core iself may well be getting hotter with the 3dnow incodeing than with the mmx, even though the temps say otherwise. i know you probably dont want to hear this, but backing it down to 1.33ghz may quite well be what it takes without resorting to a waterblock and a pelter.

back it down!? my brother is running his chip at 1.4... i can't lose face =) well, i will try this delta fan when it comes in, but has anyone had an experience where it would not work with 3DNow?
