Thanks for the recommendations, we decided to name her Ginger.

Also, what is so bad about getting a dog @ a pet store? I saw a few posts about this.

I came to the conclusion after the first day of having her I NEED a carpet shampooer. At least until shes housebroken.

Because what you don't see in the store is the puppy mill that churns out the overpriced inbred animals, while thousands of healthy young mutts are put to death at the local shelter.

well it's a catch 22. If no one adopts the pup at the store what happens?

I don't condone puppy mills, but just like Nike and other clothing companies that use sweat shop labor....America will buy it.

There are pet stores that deal with only private low volume breeders.

I agree with parts of both sides of it.

- puppy mills "mass produce" animals, and if the breeders are only interested in money, the needs of the animals are lost. Meanwhile dogs are being euthanized at animal shelters all over the world.

BUT:

I considered adopting a dog from the humane society. They wanted $200, a price I considered outrageous to take the dog off of their hands.

Also, there is probably some reason the dog is in an animal shelter. While there is no reason an owner should abandon a pet, they are probably there because they do something they don't like, such as biting, hurting their children, etc., etc. Again, these problems could probably all be solved by a patient owner, and there is no reason someone should abandon their pet, but it happens.

I was interested in getting a puppy to raise right from the start. I can teach her to act with manners from the start, and develop a greater lifelong companion.

I also knew with very little doubt this puppy was healthy & disease free, and had no bad habits from the start, a big plus for me.
