Awww . . . bloody hell . . . Neverwinter Online

Not a lot of information up on the site landing yet. Got to say, I am not overly excited about an MMO on Neverwinter. I'd rather see OE get the time and resources to do a proper NWN3. Bioware's got their own Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises to focus on.

I dont give a crap either way.
Neverwinter Nights was a rotten follow up to Baldurs Gate, proving once and for all that 3D is not automatically better than 2D.
So in my eyes its got loads of potential because it cant really lose much. Maybe this MMO will have more depth than others.

Baldurs Gate and BG2 were a tough act to follow for sure. If a company could marry the story line of the BG series with decent 3D graphics, it would be awesome. If and when I ever go back to replay BG, I always have a hard time when I realize I can't rotate the view! =P

Gee thats funny. I always have an easier time because the gameplay was designed for the lack of rotation.
In NWN they just assumed I wanted to spend 2/3 of my game time spinning the god damn camera around so I could get a half assed view of what was going on.

Of course, with the way things are going, I wouldnt be surprised if this MMO is first person or over the shoulder.

Another game that I won't be buying or playing. This looks like the way things are going overall. To be fair though, I didn't like NWN 1 at all and NWN 2 was only a passing diversion for me.

And does anyone else but me think Cryptic should change their name to Kiss of Death Studios? I don't remember the last good game they made.

In all fairness, NWN1 had some of the most impressive modules I've ever seen in an SP RPG. Some, like An Ancient Heart, rival some of the best RPGs made. They aren't for the 'modern' RPG gamer though, ie, if you consider Mass Effect 2 an RPG, those modules aren't for you. ME2 was a decent game, but an RPG experience on that level, it certainly is not.

Also, Bioware supported NWN1 for how many years after its release with patches, and the sponsoring of community expansion patches.

NWN 1 is one of the best games of all time, and that's entirely due to the insane number of player made modules, a lot of which were really good. To me it ranks right up there with BG I & II. They are different games, and a lot of people were pissed because they wanted Baldur's Gate 3 and didn't get it, and they applied that mindset when judging NWN.

As for this new MMO... no thanks. I loved NWN because of the endless single player, story-driven content, and I won't find that in an MMO.

Lack of info for me to comment on. Who the hell is doing this?

Whoa wait a sec... thanks for asking the question I just found the answer to...

Cryptic is making Neverwinter Online (Atari is the publisher - makes sense now).

THIS is Cryptic's previously unannounced third title that pulled developers away from Star Trek Online which pulled developers away from Champions Online which in turn made both suck.

With Cryptic at the helm, Neverwinter Online is poised to suck even worse than your currently miserable expectations.

If you look at it purely from a business standpoint, MMO's make a lot more sense than any other model.
If I were running a business I would only make MMO's and casual games.
Easy money.

Since when do huge initial investments with high chances of failure make a lot of sense from a business standpoint? You'd think from a business standpoint businesses would have started to realize this...

I too loved NWN1 for the single-player modded content. The OC was bad but the expansions were solid. I doubt I will give this a look simply because MMORPGs require large scale time commitments which I can't make now that I have a family.

Where Neverwinter Nights really shined was online multiplayer. In fact, people are still playing it today on servers that can hold as many as 75 people. Some of the custom content worlds are much larger than anything in the single player adventure itself.

Cryptic = Automatic "no thanks" for me.

All of their games have sucked balls. I don't see this one being any different.

I agree, they are easier money but there are landfills full of crap games in that demographic. It's also a sad reality, but I do agree.

My question to them would be this:

There is already a Dungeons & Dragons Online MMO, so how will this be any different?

Game setting with a much deeper story and history then what they made up for DDO. Maybe use a different rule set? I'm not really sure.

City of Heroes....😉 Though it's telling that CoH/V got better after Cryptic left the building.

Their current slash and burn game design plans leave a lot to be desired though. At least Roper isn't going to be in on it. Though Cryptic's slavish adoration of Salvatore doesn't make it look so good. Did he ever end up being a better writer?

I loved NWN1 with all the free user made content the game was great.

i never cared for NWN2. it was ok but just not as good as 1. of course BG2 was far far better then NWN1 or 2

I have no desire to try this MMORPG. Cryptic does fill me with a sense of awe or hope.

Thats the same problem with ANY game, and you dont have the potential for massive free money later on.
