Every time I see an animal display maternal affection towards an animal of a different species I just remember that the supposed "adoption" is nothing more than a case of mistaken identity. The mother doesn't think "oh, let's take care of this baby animal, even though it's not my own species". The mother is just programmed to display maternal affection and care towards whatever is willing to "come under its wing"...

meh, doubt it, cats arent that dumb. I doubt it even thinks the rabbit is a cat. And it certainly knows its not its own offspring.
