Awful Overclocking from my athlon x2 4200!!!

On a gigabyte k8n ultra sli, the farthest i can get is 210 x default multiplier. I am using 2 gigs of corsair 2225 but when oc'ing i only used one stick. I upped the cpu volts to 1.45 and still wont get past bios at 220. What settings do you need to change to overclock these athlon 64's? I've also tried loosening memory timings but that didn't even work! 2 things I think may be the problem: ****** antec 480 psu or my motherboard. Or, is my processor just a bad overclocker (produced in june of 06). Thank you
 
1) Did you go straight from 1.35v to 1.45? Did you try 1.40 first?
2) You say you loosened the memory timings. Is it set at low clock speeds as well?
 
My guess is your problem is the same as mine... your bus speed is limited by your mobo. Temps/Voltage are not an issue. My 144 opteron (1.8ghz) is currently running at slightly under 2.2 ghz at a 220 bus setting. And although I have a lot of overhead to overclock further, I simply can't increase bus speed beyond 220. I have an Asus CSM-VM, but from the looks of it, the problem is exactly the same.

Edit: Also, my friend's water cooled 3500+ system encountered same problem a few days ago. I came over to overclock it (no idea what mobo he has) but his 3500+ 2.2ghz was only able to hit 2.4ghz @ bus speed 220. Every time i tried to increase beyond 220, the mobo would actually lower the speed below stock 2.2 to 2.0ghz.
 
So, it's probably my motherboard? The only stable setting I can get it to is 210 bus speed....anything over won't pass bios! Maybe I should look into getting a new board....

Because there's always a limit to how fast your memory will go. As you increase the bus speed, your memory speed also increases, relative to whichever multiplier you're running. If you're running the mem at DDR400, and increasing the bus past 200, then the memory is also running beyond DDR400. Frequently, the memory can't handle this, in which case you would have to run a lower setting in order to overclock.

It's possibly your motherboard. It's possible that your board won't support HT past 210. But first take your memory out of the equation, in order to make sure that that isn't it.
 
I have the same motherboard you do. I have a clawhammer 3500. I was having problems overclocking. I moved my sata drive to the sil controller and disabled the nvidia sata controller. What happens is you overclock the nvidia controller and your hard drives cant handle it. On the sil controller the overclock does not influence the drives. Disabling the nvidia sata controller will also make your system more stable as this board has issues with the nvdia controller and network adapters.
