Airline pilots truly feared landing at this airport. The approach was a mess, and jetliners routinely approached literally a few feet above rooftops. The approach to one of the runways included a right turn just before touchdown
funny, you just reminded me of an airport runway approach that I temporarily lived under in the early 80's... if you have ever flown into San Diego then you too, have come within yards of rooftops...and if you ever went to Navy Bootcamp back then you basically lived on the edge of that runway. The funny thing is, after a while you can get used to anything and go to sleep...even jet engines...or aircraft carrier cats...or a 400 Hz power transformer 4 Ft away humming you to sleep...Discovery did a Documentary on these types of runways (included a clip of San Diego landings as well as others)also showed crosswind landings as well, although not as sharp as those...that pilot did land correctly with what he had to deal with...if he got proficient w/ that kind of landing then that would definitely be an E-TICKET RIDE!!!:D

Interesting tidbit: that 747-400 was delivered August 6, 1993, the accident happened November 4, 1993 and was written off (totalled)

A new 747-400 costs $185,000,000 to $211,000,000USD

IMO the average airline pilot is remarkably skilled. They generally have thousands of hours of flight time plus a lot of training, including simulated emergencies. Besides, automated systems these days make it so you don't even need a pilot for landing unless the situation is extreme, like in the HK video.

A bunch of the American airline pilots are trained courtesy of our tax dollars. ;)

If I were on that plane, I would have been out of my mind scared.
