When videos like this were posted before, people with flight experience said this was the correct way to land in a crosswind.

You might want to shake his hand & thank him for the excellent flying.

This is why you see him rolling out of a turn at the beginning. If you tried going straight in to 13, chances are you'd hit a mountain instead of the runway.

One of the may reasons that is now gone.

47 degree turn at the checkerboard IIRC. Nuts.

It's called a crosswind.

I believe this video was of Kai-Tak (?) airport in Hong Kong, also known to pilots as "Heart aTAK" airport. The airport was closed a few years ago (May 1998) when a new airport (Chap Lap Kok) was opened.

Airline pilots truly feared landing at this airport. The approach was a mess, and jetliners routinely approached literally a few feet above rooftops. The approach to one of the runways included a right turn just before touchdown.

There are pics and videos on the web of all kinds of approaches like this one. You can see B747 engine strikes as pilots land while trying to correct for crosswind.

With enough searching, I'm sure you could find approach plates on the web and fly the approach with Flight Simulator. By most accounts, it was the most challenging, and most feared, approach of any commercial airport.

Do a Google search on Kai Tak and you'll get lots of hits.

Better yet, go to http://www.airliners.net/ and do a photo search on Kai Tak airport (in China). You'll be wowed!

They could save some pilots a few nightmares by shutting that place down! :Q

First off, the pilot approaches the way air traffic control tells him/her to.

Secondly, the choice of runway is primarily dictated by wind direction. You want to land into the wind; you use less runway that way.

The other end of the runway? It depends on the winds, you always land into the wind.

That's some truly great flying. Just hate to have the lives of so many people depending on that kind of skill of any pilot and the manuevability of such a large aircraft at any given moment.

Well in the case of the video, it was a cargo hauler.

Airline pilots truly feared landing at this airport.

I saw a show on it once and they said just the opposite, pilots would change schedules just to get the chance to try and land there.

A friend who is a 757/767 captain for American requested to try it on the sim... The closest thing to it in the USA is the VOR approach to 13L/13R at JFK, you just have no mountains and much more forgiving weather. I'm gonna try and dig my plate up.
