not if he resigned. lot of times a company will "coerce" you to sign a paper saying you resigned on your own accord.

what they're really doing is taking any rights/benefits you may have if you got canned.

That's exactly right. I should be getting fired from this crappy job either tomorrow or monday. I played my cards right and basically they're going to release me from the company. I'm not getting fired for performance or attendance issues just my general unhappiness at the company. HR had found my resume on Monster after I posted it again after a hellish week and thats when the fun began. Basically told the VP of finance in a meeting this morning that I was not committed to the company and was currently seeking other opportunities. He said that they have a company policy of not keeping people that don't have plans to stay with the company so I should be getting fired either tomorrow or monday. As long as I don't sign that paper saying I left under my own free will, I can collect unemployment for a little bit while I finalize the plans for the business that me and my business partner are starting. I can't believe that I'm actually looking forward to getting fired.

Exact samething happened to me during my previous job. I also had a smile on my face when they were telling me that I was getting laid off. On top of that while my boss was talking to me with my smile, he asked me "you don't like it here huh?" and I said...yup...I hated it here...right in his face. hahaha...best feeling ever!

My friend was happy the last time he got fired, because he had come to hate where he was working, but thought it would be irresponsible to quit at the time. He didn't have a new job lined up, but barely had any time to look either. Getting fired took care of that little problem. :D

Hell, I think it's a great personal attitude to have.

Good luck!

Why did the 3 managers say they were firing you? Just curious.

Attendance issues. Problem was, I wasn't motivated to do the job anymore. They had a strict policy that stated you have to be there at a designated start time. I racked up a bunch of points last summer when we were moving and my wife had a baby. Then in the last few weeks, I started slacking and getting in 5 or so minutes late every other day (getting to work on time became less of a personal priority).

Wow, that sucks. I show up to my job about 20 minutes late each day, and no one really cares. But then, they really don't seem to care when I have to work an hour late or work weekends, either.

That way they don't have to kick in on unemployment if you file.

When you bloody hate the place you're working at, the only thing you'd care is that you will NEVER have to step foot into that building EVER again. It's like getting an out of jail card free :) Don't think how this will reflect on your job search is one of the higher priorities in his mind at that very moment. I know I had a big sigh of relief when I called it quits at my place. The days are just dreadful when you're stuck at a place you no longer like to work at.

Walking out of that door, you'd feel like a free man once again :p I know I did :)

Damn..i feel the same way. in fact i'm gonna call in sick tomorrow because i'm so sick and tired of it.. i need a break. I just don't have the balls to quit yet because I get paid well and it's a pretty bad market... And rent is expensive. I don't know how much longer i'm going to last though... it's killing me there..

best day of my life was when I quit my last job...

I used to have "screaming fridays" -- on my drive home, while going 70 on the highway and blasting some music, a coworker that I carpooled with and I would just scream for a good 5 minutes, to release all the pressure and anxiety that built up over the past week. it started randomly one Friday when I just started screaming for no reason, but it became a great way for us to vent some work-related anger. also became proof of how much I needed to get out of that job. hehe.

I gave them 2 day's notice :) I found out on at 10 am on a Wednesday morning that I got my current job. I had my letter of resignation on my boss's desk waiting for her when she got back from lunch, and my last day was that Friday.

I also "forgot" to tell anyone the passwords for any of my files, but they kept on calling me at home asking for them. after the second day of not picking up the phone, I eventually caved. heh.

First off your formaer employer can not tell your new prospective employer that you were fired.

Second off he got screwed out of unemployment

However he might have been disallowed for Unemployment due to the fact they were going to FIRE HIM FOR CAUSE.

I have been fired from my last two job but never for cause ;)

UEI can be trickey due to the fact that they have to prove that they fired you for cause. My last job in CA. actually tried telling UE that I quit:| I had to do a hearing (over the phone) and basically the owner admitted that he fired me for going to an interview.

The way this is spun, is usually they let you 'resign' and agree to a mutual and amicable split should a future employer call. Saying "I am not really sure why he left, but we were sorry to see him go" is usually the lawsuit friendly response.

They give you two weeks, sometimes a month and you think it's a good deal. You sign and are happy to have usually a double paycheck coming. Then you realize you gave up more in unemployement. However should you have another job lined up anyway you gain big in this situation.

The funny thing I always think of it the people getting canned and mention during their exit interviews/escort out of the building laughing at the boss or cracking jokes about their screw ups and saying they will have new and better job tomorrow. The kicker to me is (as someone that's fired people) if I knew of a job that would be better I would take it to begin with and not waste my time in a job I hated especially if the 'pay is double'.

Because it is hard to leave a 'sure thing'. Especially once you've been at a given job for several years. Even if it sucks.

I was in a good job for 5 years, went in for a raise and was told I was the highest paid hourly employee already and the only 'start' as salaried would be a $10k pay cut...if I had a degree it would be 'different' (at the time I had more than 10 years of banking experience so what would a degree have taught me?).

So I said 'fine, I will get a degree...I will start in January (it was November).' That was that....sold off some toys and did the student life for a couple years, I already had 130 so hours (in biology/chemistry) so my comp. sci was only a matter of the core classes and a few electives.

I quit my last job also to look for a new one.
