A very nice piece of equipment - and a steal at just $500.

Shame I have no use for it.

They're used in vacuum systems. It's one type along with roughing and diffusion pumps.

Well what in the hell is a roughing or diffusion pump?!?!

All three of those are just different types of pumps used to create vacuums. A roughing pump is just a mechanical pump used to create a "rough" vacuum - about 10^-3 torr. The other two are used to create much higher vacuums (lower pressure) that you can't make with just a mechanical pump.

I work with gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) systems and they all use a turbomolecular pump. And as somebody mentioned a rough pump or rotary vane pump is used to 'roughly' pump down a system, while the turbo pump really pumps it down.

$500 is a pretty good deal, however I wouldn't just buy one from ebay. Entire lack of support thing.
