Honestly, I think you should look at a VW GTi and winter tires. It hits every single "want" short of AWD. If you go manual transmission you avoid the potential DSG issues. You get upscale interior, decent economy, utility of a hatch, and the near perfect combo of fun handling without being punishing. It's the pefect daily driver.

In this type of car, I think you are going to be fighting clearance issues more than traction. A good set of snow tires on FWD is amost better than all seasons on AWD. Regardless of traction you are going to have low clearance and that front bumper is going to be a snow blade on anything more than 4".

If your truck is 4WD just keep that for a winter beater and overall haul around. You'll find you hate giving up your truck once you've had one.

Truck is RWD, I'd rather just about anything other than that, though I can handle it fine enough.

That winter tire option doesn't really matter as I'd still need two sets of wheels, and I plan on that for whatever AWD car I'd get.

go back and get the WRX, it's the best deal for what it is, unless you need something bigger, or want something in the luxury class, either way it's gonna be more $$$, higher maintenance, etc most likely. The reason the WRX is recommended so much is because it's damned good all around.

Yeah if things work out I'll be looking for this in the Fall. Here's to hoping the 2013 WRX is based on the 2012 Impreza instead of being a carryover of the 2011/2012 WRX. Not that that's a big deal, but improvements are improvements.

The rumormill is making it sound like the 2013 will see only minor changes or will be a carryover, and it will be the 2014 or 2015 model that is a new generation based on a significantly altered platform (and will remove the Impreza name completely). Some talk about smaller and a 3-door - if it's faster/better and more gas efficient, that would be cool but 3-door HB not so much. If I get a 2013 model and the next model turns out to be vastly improved all around, eh... oh well... if it's "worse", then I'll make out for the win. :D
