AWD coupe/sedan list < $50k MSRP

I enjoy keeping up-to-date on cars and trying to decide what car I will buy next. I plan to move to a town outside of Colorado Springs in a few years and plan to buy an AWD coupe/sedan. I don't want a wagon or SUV. I have an SUV right now, and it's great because I don't have a truck. I plan to have an AWD car and 4WD truck hopefully by the time I move out to Colorado. I would also like a sporty car with manual transmission, but those are few and far between. I think the G35 would be my choice in a heart beat if the 6MT version came in AWD.

Anyways, here's my list so far. All prices are from autos.msn.com, and I included the least-expensive price for each engine choice. If I missed anything or if you have any comments to make on these vehicles, please chime in.

In make-model order
In MSRP order

Check out the Infiniti M series as well.
I knew the Infiniti M came in AWD, but I thought it was more expensive than that. Thanks.

The Acura RL is AWD and under $50K.
I didn't know that Acura made any AWD cars. Thanks.

Both lists have been updated.

I'm not quite sure how much I'll be spending, but it definitely won't be over $50k; that was just my absolute cut-off point for the purposes of my research. I love the TT, but the 2 seats will rule it out as this will have to be the family car some of the time. The S4 looks perfect though: sporty, 6-speed manual transmission, 340hp. I'll just have to see what the budget (and the wife) say about how much car I can afford.

I added both the TT and S4 to the lists.

You left off Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Is it right that Toyota, Honda, Volvo and Saab don't offer an AWD variant of any cars? I can't think of any.

I can't think of any AWD cars from those companies either. I meant to add the Evo, but I couldn't find a price for the 2008 model and then completely forgot to add it to the list. I found the estimated price of $34,000 at Edmunds.

As someone who has driven in a 344 hp S4, I can say it is an excellent car.

The AWD makes the car so easy to drive and I actually prefer driving it to an E46 M3.

Engine is a fantastic German V8 and the gearbox shifts like butter.

Interior is top notch, like most Audi's, the Recaro bucket seats are one of the best things about the car.

Very easy car to drive fast. Sometimes I feel it pulls harder in 4th than it does in 2nd.

FYI - You will get realistic 20 mpg on the highway doing 75-85 mph, you can prob get 24 if you keep it under 70 but who does that in a S4?

BouZouki,

Thanks for sharing your experience with the S4. Can you or anyone else comment on the reliability of the new Audis? I'd like to get a new or low-mileage car that I can drive to 150,000 without costing me a fortune in upkeep and repairs.

20 mpg sounds about right for a performance AWD car. Even a basic Impreza is only estimated to get 27 mpg on the highway, so I don't have high expectations for gas mileage. Knowing how my right foot behaves, I'd be really surprised to ever get 20 mpg in a fast car!

Edit: I get 13 mpg in my '92 Cougar!

I have a TT 3.2L Quattro. It's a great car, but just make sure you have that truck also, or just a second vehicle in general. Yeah, there's 4 seats. But 2 of them are 100% useless unless you have children with no legs. There is plenty of room in the front seats, trunk is small. Handles great, acceleration is quick enough, and the car is gorgeous inside and out. No problems so far on mine. There are better/sportier cars than the TT by far, but I just love the overall package of it.

oh yeah, don't forget the Pontiac G8 GT - 360hp, 390 ft-lb, 4 doors, 5 seats, RWD, and ~$33k tops. available "early 2008" according to pontiac.com

edit: i forgot you wanted AWD, woops 😛

I like the TT a lot too. I've never ridden in one, and the only interior I've seen is on the roadster, which doesn't have a back seat. I didn't realize the coupe had a back seat.

Audi S5 starts at $50,500, worthy contender IMO...
Gladly added the S5 to the list and the A5 as well. I do a lot of my research for specs and such on MSN Autos, and they don't even list the A5 or S5. OMG, the S5 is one of the hottest looking cars I've ever seen! I love coupes much more than sedans, but I had almost written them off my list since so few come in AWD. The S5 seems like the perfect car for me; all I need to do is double my wages (or more) within the next few years to be able to afford it (I just graduated from grad school, so this isn't a completely impossible feat). Let's see what the S5 has to offer:
  • AWD...check
    Manual Transmission...check (6-speed to boot)
    Beautiful coupe...check
    0-60 in less than 5 seconds...check
    Sporty suspension...check
    Luxury styling...check
Well, looks like I've found the perfect car. Now I just need to find a job with the salary to afford it!

if i have $50k to waste on a car i'd probably get the S4 as a lot of people are suggesting. otherwise if i want AWD i'd just get a G37x (if that comes out...?) or a loaded legacy GT

well the S4 is a whopping 1.5k cheaper than the S5 - not much, really.

secondly, an A5 quattro may be a decent choice, depending on pricing/options and availability (when it actually is for sale) of course.

Add the Cadillac STS

Base MSRP is $43,200 and AWD is optional for an additional $1,900.

3.6L Direct Injection V6 = 302HP 272TQ 6spd Auto

BMW 335xi 6spd coupe (or sedan) and save a little money? The S4 is pretty sexy, though. 🙂

EDIT: I see you've already added it. 🙂

s5 benefits from the newest chassis that puts the engine farther back and the front axles farther forward giving it more agility. Have to wait until the new A4 comes available to get it otherwise. Although the new A4 is looking really good!
