AWD car, with a hatch for around 10k?

$10k will find you a Saab 9-2x 🙂 They can be found with or without turbo (Aero), and have cheaper insurance and a bit nicer styling/interior compared to vanilla WRX. They also lack the silly boy-racer vibe of the WRX.

Only drawback is that similar to Focus/WRX, they are fairly small. They are also hard to find as they were never very common and only made for two years. Other than body panels, all the mechanical and electronic bits are Subaru, so they're easy at least. The turbo model even has some STI gear IIRC.

Pontiac Vibe. Complete with all go and no stop Toyota drivetrain, backed by GMs dealerships of excellence!

I love our Vibe (03 FWD). Will probably get an AWD model in the next year or two.

05 Vibe AWD for 9500 BIN. Wonder if you can get BCB and FS on that 😉

09 AWD Vibe, week to go but more good pics of the redesigned interior:

03 & 04's were identical. 05-08 they had a minor exterior redesign but basically the same, though they also started transitioning to drive by wire somewhere in there. 09-10 are pretty much identical to each other as well.

Best part is the completely flat folded down rear (you can see in the pics)...you can also fold the front passenger seat flat as well. But the back is great for dogs.

VIBE might be worthwhile, isn't saab out of business now?

Yep, just like Pontiac. The Vibe and the 9-2x are both simple re-skins of existing platforms, the Toyota Matrix and the Subaru Impreza.

The 9-2x is only a Saab in exterior panels and interior bits, even the WRX/STI seats will bolt up with no trouble, and all of the engine/transmission/differential/exhaust/etc are Subaru and widely available.

And like most everything Subaru related, they don't hold their value worth a crap, so you can get em for a good price.

Definitely 🙂 I've seen a few 9-2x Aeros pass by at the ~$8k range with under 60k miles. That's a pretty sweet deal for a nice AWD Turbo.

Really? I've always wanted to get one those and couldn't find any that weren't ridiculously priced.

matrix or vibe come in all wheel. looks like a wagon to me though... why do you need a hatch and hate wagons?

the only difference is the angle of the back window.

Wagons can be cool:

That looks like a hatch??

How IS the vibe? Anyone own one? Reviews seem to be GREAT.

What's it like owning a car that's company went out of business? Will repairs be a pain in 2-3 years?

The wife and I are considering similar cars. We already own a 1995 Subaru Legacy but since I just got a job and she's going to pharmacy school in the opposite direction she needs her own car. Her parents are helping (with my objection) so the budged is around 10K. Pretty much the only cars we found have around 60K on them. We'd have to bump the budged up to 11-12K to get a Subary Legacy Wagon 2000+ with less than 40K. Also Volvo's make some nice AWD wagons for about 1K more than a similarly configured Subaru.
