Here we go,

I put together a computer for my dad and everything was working fine 2 weekends ago. It is pretty fast and a great computer for what he needs. The problem is that now (last weekend when I went home) the modem drops it's connection when I try to make it do something. I don't mean that it disconnects, it just stops sending/receiving signals and the net traffic status (two blinking computers) just freezes in it's tracks.

I connect at pretty much over 33 everytime. It's blazing fast (well for a modem) until like I said, I try to "do something". Example: I can log into yahoo messenger and aol instant messenger fine but whenever I try to im someone, the second I press send I loose my signals, I also try to change a website and just as I press enter for the new site to load it drops again. I can load up the homepage and get on to aol fine (like I said) but whenever I ask it to do something it dies.

I have used 2 isp's (NetZero and my MSU account for school) so it's not the isp.

The problem must be something with the settings with the modem or other hardware/software.

Anyone got any suggestions for when I go home this weekend to fix the problem. I am thinking....format C:

Thanks for your time!

try bumping the speed settings to 57600 or lower. WinXXX always sets the modem to 116,570 like it would ever connect at that speed.

Did you try like taking the modem slightly out of its socket and then putting it back in...because that can reset the settings in your computer too...thats what i did to mine and it worked and i had a similiar problem.

Make sure your port speed is set to at least 19200 for 14.4kbps modems, and 38400 or preferably 57600 for 28.8kbps modems. If you have a 28.8kps modem, and your software only supports a maximum port speed of 19.2k (such as older versions of PCPlus), consider upgrading to a more recent version.

Experiment with your init string. Most comm software packages use "atz" as the default string. While this works on nearly even modem, it doesn't always provide optimal results. Consider using "AT&F" or "AT&F1" instead. This will reset your modem to the factory defaults. Finally, your modem manual may contain some suggested init strings - these should produce the best results.

If you have an external high-speed modem, be sure that you have the latest serial port 'UART' chip which is currently the 16550. Until quite recently, and even to this day on lower-end systems, serial ports came with 8250 or 16450 UART chips which are not designed for higher speed communications.

Ok i know i don't know very much about computers but in the research i did tonight about the modem problem i have found to agree with Oyeve on changing your setting to 57,600 or lower to see if that makes any difference at all. :)
