I recently purchased a Denon AVR-X3100W to replace my old Denon 2310CI, whose HDMI board went bad. I've run into a couple of issues and I thought I'd post here (and probably at AVS as well) to see if I can get to the bottom of it.
1. I bought the Interstellar blu-ray and ripped it to place on my Plex server. I stream the movie from Plex to a Roku 3 which is connected to the X3100W. The rip was done in such a way to pass audio rather than re-encode it (it has DTS-Master HD audio). At a certain point in the move (around the 1:58/1:59 remark, during the scenes where Anne Hathway rescues Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain sets the corn on fire, etc) the sound ALWAYS goes out, no exception - the AVR said the audio is "DTS" format while streaming from Roku. I then put the bluray in my bluray player and played the movie without incident - the AVR said the audio was "DTS Master" or "DTS Master HD" while playing from the player. Any thoughts? I read that Roku doesn't pass DTS correctly (or at least DTS Master) or something like that, but I am pretty sure I played DTS movies from the Roku to my 2310 with no issues but maybe they weren't DTS Master. Anyway, if it is just a Roku limitation, I can live with that but just wanted to ask.
2. The more annoying issue is that occasionally, the AVR will drop audio for a split second. I've seen it with the source set to my cable box (Scientific Atlanta) and possibly (can't remember for sure) on the Roku as well. I thought maybe it was Dynamic EQ and/or Dynamic Volume causing it, so I turned those features off but it is still happening. I saw a suggestion to try a soft reset on the receiver, which I'll try tomorrow, but if that doesn't work, not sure what I can/will do. Any other suggestions? Many folks in the posts I've reviewed are saying handshake issues are common and that might be the issue here. I do have a spare HDMI switch I could out between the cable box and the AVR for some additional testing as many of the posts suggest, but I'd prefer not to do this as a long-term solution.
I REALLY don't want to have to return this receiver if I can avoid it. It is nice and got great reviews but I've been disappointed in these little glitches so far. Another factor is that when the 2310's HDMI board died, it seemed to take out an HDMI port on my TV (or vice versa) so I'm wondering if perhaps other devices might have been affected to some extent and they're causing the problem, not the 3100.
