AVR-X3100W issue

I recently purchased a Denon AVR-X3100W to replace my old Denon 2310CI, whose HDMI board went bad. I've run into a couple of issues and I thought I'd post here (and probably at AVS as well) to see if I can get to the bottom of it.

1. I bought the Interstellar blu-ray and ripped it to place on my Plex server. I stream the movie from Plex to a Roku 3 which is connected to the X3100W. The rip was done in such a way to pass audio rather than re-encode it (it has DTS-Master HD audio). At a certain point in the move (around the 1:58/1:59 remark, during the scenes where Anne Hathway rescues Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain sets the corn on fire, etc) the sound ALWAYS goes out, no exception - the AVR said the audio is "DTS" format while streaming from Roku. I then put the bluray in my bluray player and played the movie without incident - the AVR said the audio was "DTS Master" or "DTS Master HD" while playing from the player. Any thoughts? I read that Roku doesn't pass DTS correctly (or at least DTS Master) or something like that, but I am pretty sure I played DTS movies from the Roku to my 2310 with no issues but maybe they weren't DTS Master. Anyway, if it is just a Roku limitation, I can live with that but just wanted to ask.

2. The more annoying issue is that occasionally, the AVR will drop audio for a split second. I've seen it with the source set to my cable box (Scientific Atlanta) and possibly (can't remember for sure) on the Roku as well. I thought maybe it was Dynamic EQ and/or Dynamic Volume causing it, so I turned those features off but it is still happening. I saw a suggestion to try a soft reset on the receiver, which I'll try tomorrow, but if that doesn't work, not sure what I can/will do. Any other suggestions? Many folks in the posts I've reviewed are saying handshake issues are common and that might be the issue here. I do have a spare HDMI switch I could out between the cable box and the AVR for some additional testing as many of the posts suggest, but I'd prefer not to do this as a long-term solution.

I REALLY don't want to have to return this receiver if I can avoid it. It is nice and got great reviews but I've been disappointed in these little glitches so far. Another factor is that when the 2310's HDMI board died, it seemed to take out an HDMI port on my TV (or vice versa) so I'm wondering if perhaps other devices might have been affected to some extent and they're causing the problem, not the 3100.

Are you sure it is being passed without transcoding? check plex logs.

I did not ever solve it. I ended up returning the X3100 and buying a Yamaha RX-A850. Not a single nanosecond of dropped sound or issues since I swapped out the X3100 with the Yamaha. I did try to put an HDMI switch between the cable box and receiver but for whatever reason, the switch did not pass audio correctly even though it should have.

The issues continued and what clinched me returning it was a thread I read where people said Denon has known issues with Netflix DD+ (I can confirm I did see those issues with the X3100) and various handshaking issues (which is what I suspect was causing the TV sound issues).

If you're referring to my comment about the Interstellar Blu-ray, I read about there being an issue with DTS Master from a Roku to the Denon (IIRC; I may have mixed up the details a little) so I re-encoded to Dolby and it was fine. Still didn't solve the other issues though. I think I still have the original DTS rip of Interstellar so I might drop that back on Plex and try it on the Yamaha. I bet it works fine.

Ok. Whatever works. I probably should put my ht back together.

Bear in mind, I could've just gotten a bad X3100. Even if an HDMI switch in between the receiver and the other devices would've worked, I probably still would've ordered the Yamaha to try it out - I was just hearing too many complaints about recent Denon models so I decided I had to try a different manufacturer rather than risk another X3100 which might have the same problem. I don't consider having to introduce other devices into the chain as a "fix" as being acceptable for a relatively new model either.

Too bad, because I loved my 2310. I did order that HDMI switch with audio splitting and need to hook that up to the 2310 via optical in my office so I can at least use it for my consoles and the occasional Netflix show.
