Hello I'm looking at a Marantz SR4003, but don't know if it does this.

Basically, I want to be able to hook up a component video source (Xbox360) and send it to my TV via HDMI. Will it do this and what is this feature called?

It's usually called upconversion or conversion. Like they'll say upconversion from all sources or convert to HDMI from all sources.

From reading the specs it doesn't appear that the Marantz upconverts to HDMI, just to component.

The feature is called upconversion. According to the detailed specs here, looks like it will only do composite/S-Video to component.

BTW, I believe most people refer to upconversion as converting one video signal-type to another (like component->HDMI or S-Video->HDMI) but not changing the output resolution. What goes in is what comes out, only on a different cable. Upscaling, OTOH, refers to increasing resolution (eg. 480i->1080p), although I believe the two terms are oft-used interchangeably.

No idea what context the specs imply.

Actually, I think it's usually called "transcoding" if it doesn't actually enhance the input's resolution in some way.

And, yes, it's an extremely handy feature, especially combined with upscaling. I play my Wii at 1080p all the time over HDMI, and the image quality enhancement is definitely welcome. 🙂 The Wii is like a totally different system when upscaled to 1080p and using surround through DPL-II(x), albeit the graphics still look like a pig - just wearing lipstick.
