Is there no way to benchmark with Tessellation on and Advanced Shadows off?
AS doesn't look like it does a huge amount, but tessellation does look nicer.

"Awesome"... a HD5870 with DX11 max details tanks at 1680x1050 already. Not even 30FPS average... If other games follow the same pattern, DX11 will be a useless feature on those cards (the whole HD5xxx series) as they won't be able to push games at good resolutions with smooth framerates... Now, add Eyefinity and this is just laughable.

So the Radeons have DX11 (can't use it fully, cards too slow), Eyefinity (cards too slow too), OpenCL (nothing here yet so no idea, I wouldn't hold my breath though) and are pricey. The only reason to buy one now is for current games only - at least those play very good. Anyone giving those features as arguments for buying the cards "for the future" might as well write "blablabla".

Did I forget something? Ahh yes, the HD5830 has DX11 and Eyefinity and that's why it costs more... LOL

I hope this is not an indication to how DX11 will preform in future games. I can say that I was pretty disappointed when I bought my HD5850 to try out DX11 just to get low frame rates in this game. Though it did run pretty good in all my other games: even Crysis.

Well going from Soft Shadows to Soft Shadows+tesselation is only a minor hit.

As someone who has said that, I completely agree. It did look as if AS was what was causing most of the performance hit, though, and not Tesselation. Maybe Fermi will do a bit better with dx11 on, but somehow I doubt that it will be enough to matter.

First generation cards with a feature set have typically been too slow to make use of it, yes. But at least with a 6600 or 6800GT you could look at FSAA + HDR and see what the fuss is about even in slideshow presentation mode.

You can't do that with a card without the features.

Still, I'm in complete agreement that the features aren't worth a large premium. For those who have the option it may be better to skip the current generation and wait until the next.

9700 pro was pretty good at first gen DX9 games.

You guys expect these cards to do well in DX11? Where is DX10?

In 2 years when there are finally... 5 decent dx11 games to play, don't expect a 5xxx to play them very well. Also, they'll probably look the same and perform the same in DX9 mode (Crysis).

Runs fine on a HD 5970 :) Might run fine on a GTX 480.

I'd have to say though, I don't think the extra eyecandy is worth the huge performance hit.

The advanced shadows option is a joke... No one would notice a difference while playing, and it takes a huge hit, they should have tested with Tesselation only

is DX11 a gimmick on current HW implementation or what?
Yes, I agree that ATI 5XXX are faster then 4XXX and faster then current NV cards.
But, based on AvP the DX11 is useless - not much video benefits, but a lot of FPS penalty - isn't it?

Yes, ATI 5XXX is the best you can get for now, but doesn't look like it is ready for complete DX11 support power wise.
Unless AvP DX11 was implemented incorrectly  that I can NOT say for sure or even at all.

Are there any ATI / AMD comments about DX11 performance metrics?

May be ATI just short cut DX11 implementation to release cards, where NV went all the way through for full DX11 acceleration, but got into implementation / production issues? Who knows?
Looks like 2 diff strategies. Time will tell which one will really deliver DX11.
Just my observations / speculations.

They have to make up something to put in the game so they can sell more cards! sheesh. I am happy with maxxed out DX9 that runs well and looks 99% as good.

The 6800GT couldn't do AA+HDR, it could only do one or the other.

I agree, there didnt look like much of a FPS loss going from AS on+tess off to AS on+tess on

AS on + Tess off = 44.3/38 FPS
AS + Tess on = 40.6/35 FPS

Does Battlefield Bad Company 2 use tessellation??? I know it uses some DX11 effects but wonder if one of them is tessellation.
