Been Lurking Looooooooong Time............LOL (look at date joined)

I've always been a pretty big guy
When I say big I don't mean Obese but I used to be a powerlifter in my 20's
Anyways........like a lot of people I have let myself go and over the years. I have gained
quite a bit of weight, (I am now 375lbs at 6.3")

About 5 years ago I went on a Avocado Diet where I ate only Avocados day and night for 3 months
I lost an incredible 80lbs and was hitting the gym 3 or 4 times a week.......
I FELT GREAT and my sex drive was back

Then something happened in my Life as life is a rollercoaster, and I gained all my weight back and then some.
So here i am 5 years later and I cant tie my shoes or wype my ......Well you know

So My question is............
At 52 years old would it be ok if I did that diet again? Short term of course just to get me motivated
so I can get 40 to 80 lbs off my knees and then slowly introduce healthier foods and eating habits
back into my diet (SLOWLY)
Or at my age would the shock kill me?

And before you, all say go see a doctor first............
I am healthy for the most part with a slight blood pressure problem of 120/92
I just want to get a bit of this weight off my knees so I can start hitting the gym again

P.S. I quit smoking 8 months ago

Your thoughts and concerns are most welcome

Best Regards, BIG RICK

It doesn't have to be an all or nothing diet that extreme. Eat half your regular diet and half avocados if you really like them that much, or pick some other low starch and sugar vegetables and fruits. Whatever you settle on should be your new, long term (lifetime) diet, just smaller portions till the weight is where you want it.

Find whatever keeps you in check. Personally, crap can't be in the house. End of story. If your "peeps" feel/eat differently and don't care about your goals, you're done unless you move out.

fad diets...fads. Normal amounts/normal portions. Get a dietitian.

Look up sugar addiction. Kadio linked an article in the last week or so about that. Quitting sugar is harder than crack so buck up your armor/defenses.

Wish you the best.

Big Rick may have other health issues going on. A check for diabetes is a good idea.

weight-loss should be done through a lifestyle change - not fad diets.

I used to weigh 185lbs (I am 6'1") in my 20's. I then weighed nearly 300lbs in my 30's to mid 40's. I then made changes to my lifestyle and have diabetes and my weight dropped and currently sits at 236lbs. My goal is 200lbs and I'm 52 as well.

A fifteen year lurker? You should get an award for that alone.

I'm not sure why you're concerned about getting weight off your knees before hitting the gym. You just need to move. If it's flat on your back lifting 5 lb dumbells, you need to do something.

If this avocado diet is actually as you describe, it sounds pretty preposterous. Eating right isn't rocket science.

IMO, there is no such thing as a "fast diet." if you want to get back in shape you should develop strong habits. What good is a fast diet when you're going to put the weight back on anyway. Think long term.

You're also at the age where heart disease and stroke can happen pretty quickly. You should be more concerned about your overall health which is going to take time.

You spent for the most part 30 plus years eating badly. You just can't go on a fad diet and expect to be healthy. It's going to take time, energy and dedication. I'd first start off with drinking a nutribullet everyday and hit the gym for 5 minutes a day, everyday. Don't miss a day. Look to build good habits. Do only these two things for a few weeks. Then, you can start adding in more routines, healthy meals, increase gym time, etc. Micro wins are very important in the beginning. What I'm talking about sounds unsexy. It's why most people don't want to hear the truth. It's also why fad diets are so popular. Most people are unwilling to put in the work.

Good luck.

Metabolicly you don't want to do anything to lose the weight fast unless working with a doctor. Even then loose skin is no fun. Ideally you need to find a lifestyle that you can follow that focuses on healthy eating and regular exercise. Any lifestyle that focuses predominantly on whole plant foods is the one that will give you the weight saving and keep you healthy while doing it.

Most likely most of your weight gain, and how you maintain that weight is through lots of processed foods that include added sugars, processed carbohydrates and too much fat. Cut out those processed foods, added sugars, and extra fats replace them with a wide variety of whole plant foods and you'll meet your goals.

As someone who just quite drinking diet soda three weeks ago, I highly recommend that you quit drinking sugary drinks and foods totally. If you want something sweet eat fruit instead. You will start losing weight by simply cutting out sugar and white breads completely out of your diet.

This. Whatever the diet is, everybody goes on the diet, and everybody supports everybody else.

Although that's incentive to make it something both a little more planned and a little less expensive than just avocados.

Most diets these days come down to some variation of this:

1) Some sort of breakfast smoothie with vitamin and fiber supplements.
2) 4-5 small meals throughout the day, eating every ~3 hours or so. Meals consist of 1 serving of protein, 1 serving of carbs, and as many vegetables as you can stomach. USDA-sized servings, not McDonald's-sized. (So ~200 calorie chunks of meat, ~100 calorie servings of complex carbs.)
3) Lean meat.
4) <1000mg/day of sodium (no bacon.)
5) <200mg/day of cholesterol (so, mostly chicken and fish, light on the beef.)
6) No pre-packaged of prepared foods, unless they are designed specifically for the diet (like nutrisystem.)
7) Avoid soda, either normal or diet.
8) No alcohol.

You'll flush a bunch of water right away, then lose 1-2 pounds per week, more if you exercise more. The more you lose, the less strict you have to be; but you should be mostly sticking to the above.

Number 7 and 8 alone would help a big deal. Another thing to do is no sugar even in your oatmeal and coffee, and avoid white breads.
