Avira Version 10 Update

thanks for the info man!! was just wondering when the new version was due yesterday.

By the way how is it so far for you? have you noticed any big changes?

I will do this later tonight. A quick question: Is the new license key included in the download or do we need to request it seperately ? ? Can 1 download be used on more than 1 computer or do I need to download it seperately for each one ?

Thanks

@Chiefcrowe - Only changes I see is the GUI looks a bit different. Make sure you check "optimized scan" under the advanced mode if you have a dual core processor or higher. It seems like a full scan is much faster. I don't know if its just me. I also noticed that on the main window that it says my copy is activated until Sept. 2011. I don't know if I have to pay for it after that date or just renew it for free. I been using Avira for years and I usually never mess with it and I don't think the previous versions had that on the GUI menu If I'm not mistaken.

@bruceb - I think you would have to download it separately for each of your PCs but I'm not absolutely positive. You may try just downloading it once on a flash drive of some sort and installing it on each PC.

Edit:bruce, it doesnt ask or state any sort of license key during the install so I'm guessing it is included with the download.

is it still as lightweight as before? If not this may be a good opportunity for me to switch to the free MS antivirus software.

So i just tested it. Thanks for the reply Jecht..

It seems just as lightweight as before and for me it seemed like the scan was faster. I will try it on another pc soon to double check.

Yes it is still as lightweight as it has always been and the new process (avshadow.exe) takes very little memory. As long as you have sufficient ram in your system, you'll be ok 🙂.

Just downloaded it a little while ago and used the same download file fine on both computers. Only thing you need to watch for is to use the second Radio Button on the Installer to properly upgrade to the new version. You did it correct if Avira asks to Reboot after it is done.
Mine also shows activated until Sept 01, 2011 .. there is also a Renew link next to the date. Avira usually renews the free license on it's own when it is near expiration.

the instlaler allows you to choose upgrade/modify install.

choose upgrade

Yes, I found that out. For some reason the default is not Upgrade and you need to move the check to the middle box.

yea i tried with another system, modify works as well, but it re-asks what components to install again.
just poorly labeled.

As to disable of the pop up, I did an upgrade from V9 to V10 .. haven't seen it yet and I had it disabled in V9

I don't like the tray icon :^D If that's my only complaint, I'm doing pretty well. The old one wasn't so great either, but at least it was sharp and clean. This new one has that fake glass look, and it comes off kind of pixelated. Oh well, I'm happy enough. V10 seems to work the same as V9. I can't ask for anything more :^)

Its still as lightweight as ever. The UIs for virus detection and handling have changed a bit.

Some new settings have appeared. For instance:

This was disabled by default. I enabled it and didn't notice any difference in CPU/memory consumption.

Make sure to completely remove it first and then install the new one or else the notification keeps popping up. [/url]

I did an update (no uninstall) on 4 different computers and don't get the notification popping up on any of them.

I'm clicking the "Start Product Update" choice yet it doesn't seem to find the new version. Should I be going about this another way?

Does anyone else get popups from Avira advertising their own products during startup? I only use Avira on my Netbook so I don't really care that much but I can see it becoming annoying.
