Avira

I switched from AVG and haven't looked back / regretted it.

and yeah, denying that popup is a great little trick.

I use Avira also, and I don't mind the popups much. I'm not completely comfortable disabling the popup, since that's their way of generating interest in the pay for product. I've done it before, but I don't feel really good about it.

I'm curious if you guys would pay a small amount to get rid of them. I'm thinking $10 per year for the reduced function free version, or maybe some ads placed in the main program window. I think I would. I don't mind supporting products I believe in, and using this method would give Avira a little bit of money, but would still be significantly cheaper than the competition.

Another Avira user here.

Don't really get what you're saying though, lxskllr. If you don't "feel comfortable" disabling the pop-ups, why are you using the free version then? If you feel you should pay, go for it...that's why they have the premium version.

I don't disable them. I did it once as "proof of concept" so to speak, but all of my computers now are running the untouched version. I was thinking my method would split the difference between being cheap, and not having any annoyances.

The popup doesn't bother me, but of course I'd prefer it wasn't there at all. Of the 2 schemes I listed above, I like the ad in the main program window best. It seems like people's biggest complaint is the popup, and I was just musing that there might be a better alternative to that.

Is there any difference between the free Antivir Personal and the commercial Antivir Premium?

Yes. One of the big ones is that the commercial version's real-time scanner can be configured to "nuke first, ask questions later," wheras the free version's real-time scanner always asks the user what to do. This is one reason I'd gladly pay $27/year for the Premium version for my parents' computer, because they'd be clueless as to what they ought to do with a malware alert 😕

The commercial version also scans email en route instead of waiting for you to try to open a malicious attachment. IIRC it can arbitrarily pre-nuke suspicious attachments by filetype (and again, it can do this without asking the user, making this another feature that's desirable for my parents' system). It can be configured to scan outbound email.

There's also a separate "Web" module on the commercial version, with its own suite of settings. If you'd like to max out the heuristics only on stuff running in the Web browser, and run medium heuristics for other real-time protection, it can do that.

How do they compare with Kaspersky 2009 in terms of coverage and speed/responsiveness?

Kaspersky has proactive-defense features in addition to signature-based and heuristic defenses, and adds a vulnerability checkup that'll look for exploitable versions of stuff like QuickTime, RealPlayer, Flash Player, Adobe Reader, etc. Kaspersky also allows you to pre-configure what's going to happen to detected malware (I always go for "shoot first, tell me afterwards").

As far as speed/responsiveness, you can download trial versions of Avira's Premium verions and Kaspersky's products and try them out for free if you want.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm currently using KAV2009 but the license will be expiring soon so I'm thinking if I should get another AV software. KAV2009 is kinda slow sometimes...

that popup doesn't really jive w/ gaming that well.
that's the only reason i got rid of it.

I put up w/ the popup for several months, yes, its just clicking a box once a day. Its not that annoying. I understand. Regardless, I'm not paying for AV...so, after months of popups this will not work on me.

After the 2nd or 3rd time, it kicked me out of a game, I said enough is enough and denied it.

other than that its a great AV.

Yeah i hate the ad that pops up. I saw instruct to get rid

I also just switched ot avira from avg. Avg has to many false negatives

AVG. Does Avira use less than 10MB of ram like AVG does? Having to hack out a splash screen for a program that may not even be any better sounds annoying too.

AVG has crappy detection rates, and having to restart the application every other update is a PITA.

Edit:
Antivir uses 13mb on my system after it settles down from bootup.

Avira periodically gives me a pop up advertisement that interrupts anything I am doing. Is there any way to disable this? If not this AV is a piece of trash.

I use Avira as well.

The pop-ups happen to me not only upon start up, but also in the middle of a browsing session. It will just pop up and do an update when I'm in the middle of reading something important on-line. Then I have to wait for a minute or two while it updates, then counts down to closing. Very annoying.

But it is an excellent AV detector.

You can get rid of the update window by going into the scheduler and editing the scheduled update task. Set the task window to invisible, change any other settings you like, and save it. No more update window(doesn't stop popup)

...I don't get it. I've used AVG non-stop for the last 3 years. It catches many viruses here and there. What makes Avira over the top?

And is anyone considering that Panda Cloud thing?

maybe it is because avira catch more viruses in the wild including swine virus than avg does?
