This DVD was exceptionally useful in helping me calibrate my HDTV and HT System. The HD picture looks even better now, and my HT system sounds great now that I have a reference level. The Radio Shack Sound Level Meter was a big help in addition. Something to consider for your HDTVs/Audio Systems.

I have the Digital Video Essentials DVD and it's awesome, too. I think most people recommend you have both if you're really serious, though one or the other is an absolute necessity.

You used the RS Meter correction file, right?

No I haven't. Does it make a large difference overall?

I have a sound meter and DVD essentials, but I recently upgraded to a HDTV and haven't tried to calibrate anything.

How much time did it take?
Was it self-explanatory?

Avia walked me through it step by step, and it took about an hour. However, I heard DVE is a little more complicated.

I have both a analog sound meter and DVE. It takes about an hour to calibrate the sound and half an hour to calibrate the video. You should really calibrate the sound if you have a good sound system. It made a huge difference in sound quality after the calibration especially the sound level.

Adjusting the picture took me a little while because I had to play with the color and the tint. Eventually I found out that my TV is very popular because it's a CRT that can do HD, and I got into the service menu and disabled some red tinting that's on by default. The color was a lot easier to adjust after that.

The one thing I'm surprised about is the 85db reference level. It just seems too loud to me. Even at 75db it's way too loud :p I'm using an Onkyo HTIB S780 system. How many of you actually watch your dvd's at reference level?

I have that Avia DVD, but I'm either too impatient or just don't care enough to spend the time to use it and get it right. I tried it once and didn't see a big difference, so I gave it up.

Do you have a Sound Level Meter?

No.

EDIT: Actually I take that back, I don't have the AVIA one, I have the Sound and Vision Home Theater Tune-up, which is supposed to be easier to use for a noob.

Do you need the color filters to tune it correctly, or can you just use a copy of the Avia DVD without the filters?

That's what I was wondering. The Sound and Vision DVD I got talked about the filters, but didn't include them. I'm sure that had something to do with my results. Maybe I'll pick up the Avia dvd when we move to a new house, hard to tune in my apartment.

Actually it does sound and look spectactular because I been doing it as a hobby of mine for over 20 years :)
you dont have to go with the masses or do what others do and spend goobs amounts of money to own a good ht set up. I learned that spending alot doesnt me you got alot and use my money wisely and get what I like and feel suits me rather then be told or do what others say to do and buy.
