Is there some sort of avi codec required to play avi movies/files? And if so, could someone point me to a download link.

You probably need the DivX codec

The AVI extension just means its an Audio-Video file - you'll have no idea of the codec you need, however. If you have downloaded files from the internet with an AVI extension, its most likely a DIVX fie, but it could be XVid, or one of many other formats...
