AVI to DIVx Encoding

Virtualdub doesn't seem to work, when I open a video file(either mpeg1 or avi) no picture appears, I've tried both 1.3 and 1.4 with the asf patch. Can anyone suggest another encoding package or what I'm doing wrong? Thanks
 
try FlaskMPEG, but you need to find a DIVX encoder software somewhere... i have all of it but it's at home on my currently not working computer.
