I am not able to get .avi files to play under windows media player. I have .avi selected in file types, but whenever I load up an .avi, it says that it is searching for a codec, and then 'error downloading codec'. I am online when I do this. After it says the error, the file plays, but it is only the audio, no video.
Any help would be appreciated.

Try downloading Nimo's Codec Pack.

Website

It contains all the most common codecs you'll need including divx

Thanks, I tried it but no go. The only ones I am having trouble with are .avi. Anyone else have any suggestions because I want to be able to play my .avi's.

I have the exact same problem at work using a Laptop and NT4.

I think this is something to do with the way they set up the network/configuration of the company supplied Laptops though.

I also tried downloading an AVI player, however, that defeated me too - it required DX 8.1 or higher to run :(
I'm not going to fiddle with too much on the work supplied stuff - otherwise the IT Nazis can get a bit touchy - one girl (Tech at IT support) almost read me the riot act for plugging in a MS optical mouse once ;) It wasn't approved by them you see ;) (Just an extreme example)

I can play AVI files without any trouble here on my own desktop running XP and WMP v.8.00.00.4477

What OS are you running?

I'm running XP SP1 and had to get video Codecs from here, since SP1 doesn't come with those codecs built-in.

Is it every single AVI file you have that's not playing? Or do you keep trying the same 1 or 2 ?

AVI is just a file format. It could be encoded with any number of codecs, divx being just one of many. You need to find out what CODEC was used to make the AVI and install it.
