i downloaded a movie in the form of an .avi file and windows media player cannot play it, it mentions something about codecs, is there any other program that will play this file correctly?

ya I had the same problem a while back, never did figure out why completly

part of the problem apparently is XP service pack 2

I had to let windows save it in the temp folder, and then manually open it up with Divx

.avi is just a container. The file could use one of an entire host of codecs. Huffyuv, Divx, Xvid, mpeg, uncompressed, etc, etc.
