I've recently been working with this stuff......

I have some mpeg2 files that I want to convert to mpeg4....

I don't know if it's possible to convert mpeg2 to mpeg4 (divx) but using virtual dub I have been able to convert .avi to mpeg4....

However a 30min .avi is over 4 gigs in size and I get a Dub/IO video error in virtual dub and the very end of the 40min conversion process with this large file. When I test with a smaller 5 min .avi it works fine.

What I was wondering is ...... I know there is a 4gig file size limit in win 98.....But so far all I have seen is the fact that the file size can't be reported as being larger than 4gigs.....Does it actually cause a problem or a corruption problem with the file or data in the file....Does the file size limit cause any problems other than not being able to report the size correctly???

WTF bit rate are you capturing at??????
With ATI radeon AIW I capture at 4.5MBs and 1.5 hours is just under 4GB. This is in MPEG1. I use FlaskMPEG to convert to mpeg4v2 PCM audio.

I then split the file in to the two episodes and convert the audio to M$ audio V2. And that brings total file size down to ~700MB for 1.5 hours.

I would use just Vdub but it takes my T-bird 900 10-15 minutes to parse the MPEG file. Despite what people say, Flask is as good as Vdub, quality and speed wise.

You can convert mpeg2 to mpeg4 using programs like Flask or mpg2avi.

AVI is only a container for various file types, you have to specify what codec
you want to use for compression. (For example, divx is a codec that you
use to save files out to as an MPEG4 compatible .avi file).

It sounds like you are setting VDub up to convert/capture uncompressed
video and save that out in the avi file. You need to just tell VirtualDub
to convert the original avi to divx format, that way you don't end up with
such a huge file as an intermediate step. If you are doing a capture,
you need to go into the setup and specify a compression scheme in the
first place. Divx is a bit hard on some CPUs for capture, so you could
try Ligos Indeo, or some of the other codecs floating around. There
are links from the VirtualDub website for most of them.

And to answer the other part, yes it will cause serious problems for the
file system in Win98 to try to handle files larger than the 4gig limit.
Which is one of the reasons VirtualDub allows you to save the avi in
OpenDML format, which splits it up into smaller files to better work
with.

Yeah.....I mean I'm using the AIW Radeon to capture a TV show.

If I capture to mpeg2 thats about a 1.43gig file

I can't get Virtual dub to convert a mpeg2 file to mpeg4....But I can get Vdub to compress the sh*t out of a .avi file..... I figure I would end up with a 250meg mpeg4 file for a 30min show but aparently Win 98 messes up with such a large over 4gig .avi file....

So if there is a program that will let me convert mpeg 2 directly to mpeg4 then that is what I want.....

If flask will do this I'll keep trying I 'm having a hard time working with flask....I'll get mpeg2avi and try that..

Could I PM you guys with some audio codec and compression setting questions?

Virtualdub will not read mpeg2 files. It will parse mpeg1, but will not compress to it. The other software packages, like flask and mpeg2avi that were mentioned, are your best bet. You could use Media Studio, or Premier, but those cost money.
