I've always been a bit sceptical about software that claims to enhance a computer's performance, but this situation warrants comment I think.
I've got a customer's computer in at the moment (for work completely unrelated to security or performance), and when I booted it at home, AVG popped up a message saying that it has managed to shave off an impressive 62 seconds from this computer's boot time.
I have a couple of reservations about this:
1 - I built this computer and I see it in action about every 6-12 months. I've never seen it take more than approximately 62 seconds to boot up, let alone taking 62 seconds longer than necessary to start up (if it had, I would have looked into it!).
2 - The message disappeared, then out of curiosity a short while later I wanted to look into this claim. I cannot find any option anywhere in AVG that allows me to configure any performance enhancement scanning behaviour, furthermore, when I click on 'Fix performance' on the main AVG window, it says that none of the performance analyses have ever been performed.
In the past I've seen a lot of scammy behaviour from a lot of scammy performance enhancement / fixit programs. However, AVG has a reasonably decent reputation in the anti-virus market. Since they started including 'AVG Tune up' or trying to sell it to AVG users, especially ones who have actually paid for AVG, I've been less inclined to recommend AVG to customers as this sort of behaviour isn't very user friendly. I wouldn't have thought they would go as far as this though, because the claim that their software has made appears to be entirely without basis.
