AVG anti-virus sucks!!!!!

I just came across NOD32 lately, and it seems great so far. I never used to use an AV before because norton sucked so much resources :-/

I always recommend if you use a free AV program to do a check now and then with one of the good free online AV scanners like Panda ActiveScan or BitDefender, they will also clean any viruses they find.

You can also use them with any paid AV software for double checking too.

Interestingly enough I had AVG catch a trojan on my machine this weekend while Kaspersky sat quiet. (I just configured remote access for the first time through XP, I thinkI need to work on determining the right way to configure it for security reasons). Also Kaspersky does not seem to start unless I launch the executeable, that's really lame, I'm guessing it's configured this way only for the free trial?

I was running AVG at one time when 6 was still out. I was forced to upgrade to 7 and it wouldn't install correctly so I got rid of it. I put on AntiVir and it worked great, it even picked up stuff that must have been on my machine while AVG 6 was on too (kind of scary that AVG didn't pick it up). The only thing was that I missed the email scanner with AntiVir.

Now I'm using Norton, but only because I put their crappy NIS package on and it freaked out cause it had an antivirus already installed. I think I'm going to be switching back to AntiVir and using a different firewall.

Bit Defender 8 is on my system right now, but just like the other 3 freebies. Be aware that it is only an on-demand scanner so it must be run manually. No big deal as all the other av's are disabled also.

This leads to my biggest problem with Bit Defender. Even though it cannot scan as a resident program, it loads 2 services. Other av's do this as well, but if you do not run them resident, you can simply set the services to manual and then double click to launch the program as expected. Not with Bit Defender. With the services set to manual, the program will not load. You have to run services.msc and click start on the 2 items. Only then will Bit Defender load. Not only that, the program is sluggish on this AMD64 3200+ with 768MB RAM.

I am thinking about uninstalling this unfriendly program even though it has a better detection rates than AVG, Avast, or AntiVir.

That is true. What I've simply done is set them to manual so they don't start up with the machine and when i want to run it I just go into adminstrative tools and manually start the processes required and then start bitdefender. Same tools go for ewido. Since both are on-demand scanners and I might only run them once a week or every two weeks the few seconds reequired to that I don't mind especially for the protection bitdefender provides which is excellent.

The only thing is killing the bdnewsagent is more of a hassle

LOL, Remote Access for the first time and you found a trojan, well, well. Did you know, or are you aware that "Remote Access" is based on trojan technology and I bet that this is what it detected not a real trojan. 😉

Guess I never thought about what you said but yeah that would make sense wouldn't it?
😱

Oakenfold you might want to contact them and tell AVG that it gave a false report over "Remote Access" and see what they say, as well as you knowing the actual name it reported, etc.. hopefully you have a log going.

Well there could be a real trojan, but as I stated, "Remote Access" is based on trojan technology.

ALOHA
