It would be much easier to illustrate unit canceling if there was an easy way of writing fractions on a message board.
Either you have really amazing mental math skills
Given my history, that seems to be the case.
I do not have any amazing technical math skills, but I do seem to have a gift for proportions that matches me very well with component-level troubleshooting.

Now that I think about it, I'm kind of surprised the vbulletin wizards here haven't implemented an equation writer. I've seen it built into other forums. It would be much easier to illustrate unit canceling if there was an easy way of writing fractions on a message board.
If the original question had something like 900 miles @ 3.6mph you would have applied your original logic about the curve being obvious but you would have been wrong. You haven't provided any equations that makes me think you would have come to a different conclusion between 900 miles and 1000 miles.
900 I wouldn't have been able to say. Things are still going in the right direction, but I work best in 10's, 5's, and 2's. (Eight is ok because I can split it into 80% of 10/20% from 10 and work from both sides.)
As for what makes you think what, I don't care. There's amusement to be had watching people stumble around in the darkness. It tends to be easier to correct someone if you first let them get really wrong, anyway.
